Mk4 Golf - radio not working

The aftermarket sony stereo in my mk4 golf is playing CDs perfectly well but is not picking up any radio signal. I've read stuff online about mk4 golfs being particularly tricky to fit with aftermarket radios, something to do with them needing an amplifier to pick up radio signals...

However on the head unit itself several UK stations are saved on the memory, as in Radio 1 or whatever shows up on display. Given that it is a v recent UK import, could it be that it will only pick up UK stations for some reason, or should it just pick up Irish stations automatically anyway?

No. Frequency range would be the same here and there.

    What model stereo is it?

Sony CDX-4000R. Not exactly state of the art but decent enough.

You shouldn't need an amplifier, simple as that.

With my MKIV, the actual plug can easily slip off the radio aerial socket if I am not being careful putting it back in.

I have had two aftermarket units in my car. FM is fine unless I am using a high powered cig power socket for phone chargers, which I learned recently can cause issues.

Having the same issue with my mk4 and JVC after market unit! Bought an amplifier but it made no difference! Not sure what else to try or is it simple a case of put up with it!

Most likely the tuner unit is faulty in your Sony radio. Very common complaint..

check the wiring at the back of the radio that nothing has been pulled away, fault diagnosis always look for simple things.

Turns out that this was the case. I changed the head unit and the radio works fine now, no need for an amplifier in the end.
