Car Maintenance Course

    Hi Folks,

For too long I've put off properly learning about cars and I'm looking at starting with the basics in terms of general maintenance. I have tried the usual random google search but all the ads and lists of nightcourses seem to be very old. Similarily, when I've looked up some of the colleges and schools websites they seem to be out of date.

Would anyone have a recommendation for an introductory course? I live in Leixlip so no bother traveling around the Dublin area for a course.

    Thanks for your help!

If you have a set of spanners and you're own car to work on, youtube is a great resource. Start with simple jobs, and work from there

I did any introductory night course in car maintenance in Kylemore College.
Don't know if they still do it.

The course gave me the confidence to go and fix things on my car myself.
That said I don't think you learn enough on these courses to be able to do much yourself.
Haynes manuals, Youtube videos and How-to's on enthusiasts sites are what really helped me out.

As others have said start small, replacing an air filter or cabin filter and take it from there.
Knowing someone who can help you out if you get stuck is really beneficial too.

I did a car maintenance course last September in cabinteely. They run from Sept Nov and again in jan-mar. Was 110 euro iirc. Gives a full overview of all serviceable and self maintenance parts on a car.

If I'm honest most of the info was available on YouTube if you know what to search for.

Take a look at the link below.

He's american and his accent and presentation will be annoying to some. But whether you're a seasoned pro or an enthuiasist you will learn something from him. it's all engine diagnostics and no diesel included but definetly one of the better ones imo.

you can learn it yourself , using you tube and online manuals , haynes manual

practise on ye olde banger ,
or if you like a ball tingle , on the old car you use and depend on every day .

nothing tightens the crotch like getting so far on a job and realising
you bit off more than you can chew and now have to go all the way to the end no matter what
especially on a sunday evening when you have to drive to work on monday .

ahh ! livin on the edge!

just dont do it on a car thats in warranty .

That's one of my small goals when I start earning a bit more money, buy an old banger and have a play around with it. The missus will probably have a stroke though, she gets on my case enough about bikes in the house, can't imagine she'd be happy with a rust bucket sitting in the driveway.

Some posts removed that was dragging thread off-topic.
Does anyone have any courses to recommend?
