Your not going to get a good one with a breaker bar for €40.

A good breaker bar will be €40 on its own.

ok forgot the breaker bar, any socket sets under 40 euro

Some of my inch drive sockets cost near €40 a piece. My 77 piece snap on 3/8 set was £200/€250ish. It includes a breaker bar.... Sort of. I had it replaced already after I broke the head of it :o

What size of socket set and what type of work, as anything that cheap new will not be the greatest quality for anything heavy (both for the sockets and nut/bolt heads)

I'm assuming that you want the socket set to work on your car. The set I've linked to below is nearly twice the price you're looking to pay, at €70, but its the cheapest set I could find that would give you a good range of sizes etc to allow you to work.

    http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=15551&langId=-1&categoryId=290505&productId=862455&storeId=11101

I have one of the larger sets (150 piece) and I can't fault it.

There are professional range sets in Halfords for €40 and less, but the range of socket sizes will be severely limited, so you'll find yourself augmenting the set at a greater price than t the larger set.

Lastly, if you do go for a socket set in Halfords, steer clear of the phaze range of tools, they're made of brie.

    Go to Halfords and check

Wait for a deal at Aldi/Lidl.

I bought an ultra cheapy set in Halfords for €8 about 3 years ago now. The ratchet seems to be mostly made of cheese, but truth be told, I still have it, it still works (use it quite often on my bike). Bought it to replace my rocker cover, I figured if it did me for the one job i'd have got my money worth.

(I have also bought a serious set of the Halfords Pro tools now, but still!)

OP, go to halfords and look around, if you only need it for some small job I don't see you having much issue.

They are both 1/4" ratchets, may not have enough grunt for bigger or difficult fasteners

The €40 budget isn't going to get any quality at all. I'm not suggesting taking a mortgage out for some overpriced tat, but €40 puts you deep in the make of chocolate territory...

I've got a Sealey AK730 breaker bar. Picked it up in Southside Motor Factors when on offer for €17 at the time. 1/2" drive and 600mm (24") long.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000O619PA

They do a 750mm (30") long version too

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002PMJ2LE

Replacement knuckle can be bought separate.

I've got a Halfords Professional one somewhere too. Although over here they want over €32 for a 600mm one (unless you get a discount (e.g. AXA card)). Same again, replacement knuckles can be had.

As for the socket set, wait until Aldi/Lidl have got one in on special. They are okay for the money.
