Noisy water pump when not in use

    Hi,

I live in an apartment and recently the water pump in the hot press makes noise for 3-4 seconds when the water is not in use. Before, this noise only occurred when the shower or taps were on but now it happens at any time of the day or night.. it is becoming fairly annoying and i'm wondering why this is happening and what can be done?

    thanks..

It is usually one of two main reasons.
Either the non-return valves in the pump are faulty and need replacing, or you have water dripping from a tap or a valve or a minor leak somewhere.

    Thanks K.Flyer,

Is there much cost to having this checked / repaired?

Or if it's a negative head pump the vessel might need to be repressurised or replaced

Our pump used to be like yours but ever since we got our boiler serviced it's much louder and goes off at random times, not just when water is in use. I can hear it halfway down the corridor.

Anyone any ideas as to what could be causing this?

That would be nothing g to do with your boiler service , your heating is totally separate to your plumbing .
It's probably getting louder as you are neglecting to do anything about the problem , soon you will be faced with getting the whole pump replaced .

We only got it replaced a few years ago. It was making no noise (bar the usual) until the service guy left - coincidental timing I guess.

I'm not neglecting anything. It hasn't been ongoing for weeks and weeks. I'm looking for help and any suggestions as to what the problem may be?? I'm not calling out a plumber to tell me there's 101 things wrong. I'd like to have some idea if anyone has anything constructive to add?
    TIA

Mine did the same, and eventually I had to have it replaced as it just blew.

My problem was that the toilet cistern was overfilling very slightly, so that every now and again the pump would need to come on to top up what had leaked out of the overflow pipe.

Not 101 things, but they are the most common causes.
