VRT - 2 cars

    Hi,
I'm importing two cars from the UK this year. I've been a resident in UK for over 10 years and i'm moving back to Ireland (transfer of residency). I've held the cars for over 6 months each and have all of the necessary paperwork. I realise i can only claim VRT exemption on one car but how do I ensure its on the more expensive car? Both will be brought into Ireland at roughly the same time - i know the exemption process is separate but approval for exemption on one and paying it on the other could end up on the same persons desk so to speak. Any help/suggestions would be great. Thanks

Put in both cars' details into the VRT calculator on Revenue's website.

I believe you can transfer two vehicles using TOR exemption. I did.

One of the questions asked on the ToR form is whether you have received an exemption in the last five years. What did you put in there?

I brought in two, but separated by six years!

Oh ok. I was led to believe you could only transfer 1 every 5 years.
Did you import your cars recently?
    Thanks

i dont think its right that you only have car for 6 mts , means you can buy expensive car knowing you will avoid vrt and latter sell on

a couple near me moved into modest house from the uk - they brought car/ van and 3 yr old fairly expensive 4x4 with them - now ir. reg.

then 2 yr old merc. slk turns up and now thats irl. reg. ? suspect.

they are living in house that you really wouldnt expect to see these cars !

Out of interest, what has the type/value of house they live in have to do with the type/value of cars they own? Maybe they like having nice cars while being content with modest accommodation. If they meet Revenue's requirements for VRT exemption then I don't see the issue. If these requirements are being abused then it's up to Revenue to review them and act accordingly.

So they both imported 2 cars each, who gives a damn, the Government screw enough people living in modest houses. Just be glad that there's an ordinary person (as in not a Denis O'Brien) escaping

Two at the same time. It was 2012 so I would be surprised if different now. Check revenue.ie or give them a ring. If it's a legit move and you meet all the requirements both cars should be exempt.

Just checked the tor form. Bottom of page one says for each separate vechicle fill out a separate page 2. There may not be limit then on the number of vechicles. I believed it was two.

Doesn't appear to stipulate a limit. Providing each vehicle meets the eligibility criteria and has a paper trail for it, then there doesn't appear to be a reason why you cannot bring your personal belonging with you - even if that is 3/5/10 cars.

When I moved over here, I did a TOR on a vin/vet (over 30 year old) vehicle. The Revenue suggested that as it was only 50 EUR, I might as well just pay it, but I insisted that they do a TOR on it and was more than happy to supply copies of everything.

Thanks macplaxton and vintagevrs for your suggestions. I phoned the revenue and there is no issue applying for an exemption on 2 cars - provided all of the paperwork is in order.

The five year clause confused me initially but I assume that would only apply if you have previously imported and claimed an exemption.

Yes, that's it exactly. You will also have to inform revenue if you plan to sell either vechicle in Ireland within 12 months of import if they are exempt as VRT (full/partial I am not sure) may be owed if you sell within 12 months. Hopefully that will not be an issue, but something to also consider. It will state this on the log book of the cars.
