Is free entry to next years race a fair prize?

I've been in a situation twice this year, where I've got free entry to next years event. I appreciate a group of people out there will say a prize is a prize and be thankful, but i think this is a cheap option out for the race organizer. Is also assumes that you want to go back to the event next year.

Since parkrun is free, then everybody gets a prize!!

Very miserly, and clearly a cheap cop-out from the organisers.

If a prize does not exceed the cost of a race entry it's not much of a prize, is it?

Even if for some reason they don't want to give out cash prizes there are still alternatives. Last year's race in Dingle comes to mind when I got a trophy, a box of goodies AND a free entry into next year's race, and that was only for third place.

I suppose it depends how the prize is billed -- if it says 'generous prizes' or 'cash prizes' people might be disappointed. Probably people who make a bit of a living from race prizes know which ones to target, and for recreational runners, placing is almost its own reward?

I won free entry to next year's event (and a nice mounted landscape photo) in a race recently* and I was delighted with it -- I hadn't expected to place, I loved the photo, I'd really enjoyed the race and would like to do it again, so getting a voucher for next year's race was the icing on the cake.

    *3rd woman, not overall victor!

it's a crap prize. I seen your result from the weekend, some assumption from the race organisers that you will be able to travel down there again to do it. I'd honestly prefer nothing.

I've "won" a couple of free entries to the following years events in the past and told the orgnaiser what he could do with them!

Depends on the race, but in most cases it's a rubbish prize. Entry to some destination marathon is worth it, entry to a local 5km that only cost a couple of quid to enter, not so worth it.

Hung around to wait to collect an age group prize after a race recently. It ended up being a voucher for 10% off a set model of Mizuno shoes in a shop where I already get 10% off by default due to being a member of a local club, and the "voucher" had to be used within a month. Wasn't worth the paper it was printed on, but I'm sure the race will have used that 10% in their calculations when claiming that they had hundreds of quids worth of prizes for the race.

Would have appreciated a cheep bottle of dodgy wine from the local Tesco much more, or some plastic trinket with the race name and category position on it. Either of which would have cost the same as the fake 10% off, but you'd at least feel like you are getting something tangible for your efforts then.

OK, That IS a bad prize! I know I said a good race is its own reward, or words to that effect, but 10% off something you may not want is a terrible prize! I hope you at least ate loads of free post-race food to make up for it.
