Just looking for some advice on this. I recently rang my dealer as I'm thinking of changing my BMW and had heard about these engines. I've never had any problems with mine. My dealer didn't say too much about it but did query why I was ringing, he basically said if it isn't broke why fix it. He did say to bring it in though for a look if I was worried. Since then, a trained ear tells me there appears to be a rattle and that I should get it looked at and that BMW were fixing these at their expense as they've acknowledged the issue. Ive done a lot of searching and it looks like BMW did issue a statement in January this year but why didn't my dealer tell me this when I rang or better still how come no recall. Anyway, not too worried about that now, I just want to know how to approach this now, does anyone know if this repair/replacement is done at their expense?

    Very simple.
    Ring dealer.
Tell him you want the engine tested under the QE program for the timing chain/tensioner issue.
They have a specific tool for this.
If it falls under the criteria, then bmw will change all the required parts for free. There a calculation relating to mileage/age etc that determines what exactly gets changed.

There's also a large thread on this very forum about it.

I dont think BMW will fix for free. They wanted €2K crom a mate of mine who owned a,520 2008. The garage "reckoned" the fix would cost €5K !

    @Webpal.
i accessed the link u provided - using my mobile phone - The site / pages are hard to access & read properly - When attempting to enlarge to a readable font, the pages shutter from 1 to another.

I wonder does these actions on the Bmer page, replicate the performance of their N47 engine.

Wouln't touch a Bmer - despite their reassurances that the N47 engine prob is resolved since April 2011.
Also I believe the New Avensis is kitted out with the same engine !

    They do indeed.
I informed a friend who recently was speaking with me and I thought his engine sounded a bit rattly.
I told him ring BMW Ireland which he did and he followed their instructions from there.
The engine was stripped out after tests and work repair work was done free of charge.

It was a 2008 520d auto with over 100k on it but had service history.

I rang them and am entitled to a tensioner which any BMW garage will do free of charge. Does anyone know if this will resolve the issue fully? I was going to change but I might hang on to it for another few years if this resolves the problem

As far as I am aware.
They conitnually test as they are going.
They will replace as little as is needed. If more is needed then more would be replaced.

I dont think you are correct ;)

BMW will fix for free and start by replacing the Tensionor only, and then depending on how far the slack has travelled, will replace more, including but not exhaustive : both chains, drop the gearbox, drain the gearbox and replace oil. replace engine oil and filter. replace coolant. fit a ton of new nuts, washers, gromits in there somewhere (i wont pretend to know exactly where).

they done all the above and more on my 08 520d with 130k km and partial BMW history.

Well all I can say is, they must ave changed their policy.
    Wonder why there wasn't a recall !

They changed their policy a few months back.
No need for a recall as its not a "safety" issue and it did not effect every N47 engine out there. They have a list of VIN numbers effected and can tell you over the phone is your VIN is in the catchment list.

My car went into M&G BMW in early March and it was done free of charge. The dealer only that day got told by BMW Ireland about the QE Program. They were chargin up till then but some cars got some goodwill even before the goodwill as i got a call to say i was getting 100% and my mate was very surprised as it was the first 100% goodwill on the chain he had seen.

Later that day the internal letter came in.

I have a 2008 520 with the n47 engine. The car has covered 146000 miles. It has a full service history but not from BMW. Would this car be covered for the timing chain check?
Is there any criteria the car has to meet to be eligible for this check? (Aside from the vin)?
