Hi all! I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on a problem I'm having. The fan in my golf is not turning on when it should causing the engine to over heat after around 40 mins driving. The fuses are all fine so would I be right to assume that the thermostat and/or sensor may be faulty?

If so, is their replacement a job that can be carried out by an amateur?

I have yet to open any pipes but I did notice a buildup of some residue around the sensor, presumably some coolant slowly seeping out?

My dad (fairly knowledgeable about these things) had a look at it and said that if I take off the coolent pipes from around the rad/engine I would risk getting air intoi the system which may cause further problems

I would be grateful to hear any advice!
