Time to replace my old HP TouchPad - recommendations?

    Hi all,

My 4 year old HP Touchpad is finally dying. Was a great tablet. 32GB storage with wireless charging for €150.

My new requirement is for a good value movie and game playing device (including Netflix etc) used mostly by a 12 year old but also by the whole family for general web browsing. My 15 year old son has a 2nd generation Nexus 7 which I really think is amazing. It has 32GB storage, a great screen and is seriously fast. It fits in jeans or jacket pockets and despite being highly portable the 7" screen is still big enough to enjoy movies on and play games on etc. My preference is for something which is portable so an 8" screen is probably as big as I'd like to go.

I don't want to spend what a Nexus 7 would cost so I'm thinking of getting the Asus 7" MemoPad for €140 as Asus made the Nexus 7 and this is their own version using the same form factor. It only has 16GB storage and 1GB RAM but it takes Micro SD cards so the storage can be easily expanded. http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/asus-memo-pad-7-tablet-black/318353/398.1.0

What do people think? Is there a better device available for the money? I don't want to buy a Chinese tablet from the likes of Gearbest etc as I tried that with a phone a few months ago and I just found the device buggy. I'd rather buy a device which is well developed and well supported.

Thanks for reading and for your suggestions/feedback.

Same position as yourself. My HP touchpad stopped responding a few weeks ago.

I contemplated a HUDL2 but i was put off by the potential of a new one being released in september.

I picked up 2013 Nexus 7 second hand for €70 and its been perfect so far. Updated to 5.1.1 and no lag or slowness so far very happy with it.

I think you would regret spening money on something with only 1GB RAM....

    nexus 7 16gb/32gb are currently €160/€180

Also in the same position. I love the TP and I have it running 5.1 at the moment, but it's just no longer very responsive and I'm looking at replacements.

I'm looking at samsung offerings but their tablet line up is so confusing. Tab, Tab S, Tab pro, etc etc. There's an 8.4" one that looks quite good, as does the top of the range Galaxy 10.5. I'm really not settled if I want a 8 or 10" device though. My phone is 5.5 and 8.4 just seems a bit too close to that to bother. 10" is a different category almost with it not so easy to use in the same way.

Other alternatives are Xiaomi mipad, Nvidia Shield, and the (HTC) Nexus 9.

Better engine all right than the Asus with 2GB RAM but is limited to 16GB storage (no SD card slot) which just isn't enough for me as the device will be a bit of a movie vault. Full specs at http://www.gsmarena.com/lenovo_s850-6158.php

If it had an SD card slot I'd be on my way to Littlewoods Dundrum right now!!

You're looking at a different product there, here are the correct specs - http://www.gsmarena.com/lenovo_tab_s8-6681.php

    It'll take a micro-sd.

Thanks for pointing that out Corwill, appreciate it. Very positive review of the Lenovo tablet here - http://www.tlbhd.com/lenovo-tab-s850-review-19498/

I actually factory reset my HP TP last night as a last ditch attempt to get it functioning to a good level again and it worked a treat. I loaded 20GB of Modern Family for my daughter (all 6 seasons) plus a few movies and installed about 12 must have apps (inc VLC and MX) and it's rocking along perfectly. Given the HD screen, 32GB storage and wireless charging (LOVE being able to just sit it on it's stand to charge) I really can't justify spending any money on a replacement which might have better specs in terms of processor and RAM but doesn't deliver any better experience for what I need i.e. watching movies, Netflix, streaming online content and general browsing.

A factory reset is always worth a shot.
