While they need to be removed from the road setting up a checkpoint on a motorway is insane.

Could they not just instal ANPR on all motorways and track them all?

Do we need to wait until there is a major accident for Gardai to stop mounting checkpoints on motorways?

    Stupidity of the highest order.

And as for OPs post I think you may be jumping to conclusions with your assumption. It's not unheard of for people to not insure or tax their cars because they're lazy gobshytes.

Laziness is the kindest possible excuse to be made for people without valid insurance. Stupidity is the next kindest. Unfortunately it's my belief that most of them are just plain ignorant cntbags who know all their entitlements but don't give a sh1t about any responsibilities of a decent member of society.

If they are priced off the road then they shouldn't be on the road! I've no sympathy for people caught at these checkpoints.

Why not sell the 2011 car and buy an older car for less money and use the money saved to insure it?

Insurance has been pulled from ANPR as they don't have access to any insurance details.

Not too long ago a 2011 Kia was seized for no insurance outside of Dublin.

Sign of the times and proof that insurance companies are pricing people off the road with higher premiums.

Might not be at all relevant in these cases but for what it's worth how about this....
20 years driving on full licence not one accident.
I leave Ireland for a few years.
Drive overseas for 5 years no accident.
In process of coming home so I do an online quote over the weekend for car insurance at home on a 2L worth 3500.
Wanted to see what sort of budget I'd have to buy 2 cars once I factored In insurance.
Only one person will quote me....6500e because my no claims bonus in Ireland is more than 2 years out so goes back to zero....! This despite me driving up until today with a full NCB in Aus and previously in Ireland.

Apparently I'm high risk now because I haven't had an Irish policy.

I hope to get a better quote in person but am expecting a 2000e hit each for me and wife.
Must say the thought did occur to me about running the gauntlet but will try to do the right thing, but Ffs that is a lot of money to fork out just because I left the country.
Seems the government can't intervene because it's private enterprise but if you make something compulsory and then refuse to help regulate this is what happens.
    Not impressed!

Is this a cry for sympathy for uninsured drivers?
Get them off the road NOW. If you cannot afford it, don't drive.

We all have to pay tax and insurance and we all b1tch and moan about the cost. That's the cost of doing business though. Cant afford it then dont drive. Simples.

A 2011 kia would have cost the owner thousands, you cannot claim their insurance was unaffordable, unless they have claims.

If you can't afford insurance don't drive, simple concept.

Go to a broker and if needed get a smaller engined car. Late 30s with a full Irish license even with no experience and you'll get a reasonable quote if you invest some time.

I hate that excuse of "sign of the times, people can't afford insurance". .

Whatever about tax and test, have had mine out of date temporarily from time to time but anybody without insurance shouldn't be off the buckin Road full stop. Total disrespect for everyone else.

I'm pretty sure they know if the car is insured or not and the expiry date of the insurance and tax. Beyond that you probably have Data Protection concerns but the basic info is there. Shocking they can't have some joined up thinking as regards ANPR.

123.ie wanted to charge them €40 admin fee every time the Gardai queried their database...

A wayyyyyyyy back when they could radio in and they could be told the tax and insurance expiry dates with the name of the registered owner. I'd imagine that is the limit of the information available given Data Protection. That said, how much more info would you require on the roadside?

You simply can't over-state the shocking nature of the Gardaí Siochanna's technical infrastructure. It barely exists. There are stations that don't even have a PC, nevermind an internet connection!

Too tight in some cases. How anyone is dumb enough to drive without insurance is incredible .
Really no excuse. Many options available .Pay on the drip. Get into a 1000cc car. Shop around and refuse the first quote. Choose third party only .deal directly with insurance companies as brokers have to make money and you will pay for the privilege .limit the policy to the driver.Devalue your car each year for premium price as you will only get the OMP value back if you get a smack if on comprehensive cover.
It's those who don't pay that has the rest of our premiums so high on top of the ridiculous payouts.
Thank Christ they clamped down on the bozos with foreign plates whose policies you'd find hanging on a roll in the toilet.

You can tax a car with a made up insurance number so until the insurance companies are online with the motor tax office to verify the policy you're at nothing .

Motor insurance companies should be required to provide automated policy verification of all EU policies for ANPR. End of.
