So i sold my car today. The first car I ever owned. Just a bog standard 1L 98 polo, but it was mine. Had it for 5 years, invested a stupid amount of money in it, passed my test in it. Countless memories. But the time came to say goodbye and move on.

Not gonna lie- probably gonna miss it. It's almost like it had a personality.

Anyone any stories of their first car?

Bought my starlet 3 1/2 years ago for 700e. Like you I've spent a ridiculous amount of money over the years between brakes/motors etc. but she's completely mine.

Learned to drive in her (keep in mind that there's no power steering or anything in the car) - most memorable moment learning to drive was getting stuck at a junction with my dad after my second lesson. Couldn't get the car moving, two changes of lights. Turns out I'd the car in 3rd gear!

We now have a leaky roof, brakes that are questionable, no working radio, indicators that stop working when you use your hazard lights.. so I think poor Betty may not make it through the next NCT. Can't wait to upgrade to power steering, but I'll miss the rattle of the wind through the car on the motorway when I eventually change.

Yeah mine didnt have power steering either. I got used to actually feeling the turns and the road without it that now driving other cars feels weird!

Yep, bought a 1.4 astra for 1500, and it took me the lenght and breath of the country and had many many fond memories in that car, it gave no trouble at all, sold it onto my brother and its been sitting in my driveway ever since, it'l run again one day

I once owned an old Almera for 6 years, never gave any trouble. Just regular servicing, didn't even break down once. It's been a while now since I sold her but each time I see a silver one on the road, my head turns and I look at the reg plates :)

I still have my first car in the shed hasn't been used as such since end of 2011.

Couldn't bring myself to get rid of it. In the past months I sunk 6-800 quid into it to get it going again. Brake discs, caliper, rad, steering joint, track rod end, steering rack gaiters replaced (failed the NCT on this), got the tracking done (pic below), 2 new front shocks gone into it. Still have to horse on a bit of schutz, check the gearbox oil and possibly change a CV boot and then I'll be away for slates. NCT booked for the 8th

Had my first car, sold it, had a rake of things in between, then bought it back.

Genuinely can't see myself ever getting rid of it at this stage.

Bought my first car in 2007. A 99 corsa. Absolute death trap. I'd be quicker listing off the things that did work in short 5 months I owned it but it somehow managed to pass an nct. Had it when I was in school at the end of 6th year. I reckon I would have ended up with a much better leaving cert if I didn't have it but I'd take the memories any day. Traveled all over the country with friends in it in the short time I owned it and missed a feck load of school as a result. A friend dug out a load of old photos recently (actual paper ones ) and she has plenty of the corsa. Still managed to get a grand on a trade in against a corolla which I had for 5 or 6 years. That thing never missed a beat. Was more upset having to part with that over the corsa. I traveled a lot serving my time so it was all over the country a few times and the UK. Every other car afterwards was just that...a car. I love my current car but if she had to go tomorrow for whatever reason I wouldn't be too pushed.

    Yeah 1st car I owned - brand new - bought for £10k cash - Opel Kadett 1.4 LX - Lovely car - had it for 3 yrs - not a scratch - Reg 90 D 11167.

But I have more memories of the 1st car I drove & learnt in - 1968 Ford Anglia DELUXE - No radio Reg UZJ 902. The car was part of the family so to speak - We (my Dad) had it till 1980.

Same as Pic - Same colour as well - I informed the colour was called Embassy Maroon.

PS - After about 10 yrs my Dad got the car resprayed the xact same colour.

If I was old enough & had an Anglia now - it would resemble the attached

Starlet. Grand. No complaints. May have been silver. Drove it till it would drive no more. Scrapped, and repeat with fiesta. Grand. No complaints. Definitely red. Drove it till it would drive no more.

Zero sentimental attachment. Currently on a Focus. Won't buy another focus...

2002 Skoda Octavia 1.4 ambient i bought in 2007 and kept for 5 years (still have it)

I think the transition from 75 to 225 bhp made it easy to stomach :p

That's what I'm afraid of. Drive both of my parents cars, which are substantially more up market and Im over steering and then almost killing myself "tapping" the brakes how I would in my own!

You threw that in there for a laugh, didn't you...:D

The car used to love cold weather. Must have been the denser air, but it always felt like it ran better. Parallel parking was always a laugh.. if ya didnt line it up exactly perfect on the 1st try ya may as well not bother- you'd never get it in!

Purchased Corolla 1994 1.3 xli in 2006 for 1850. The plan was to keep it for a year and change for something "better". Sold it in 2014 for 700. It was my first car and God did I like it. No character as such but for a vehicle with 300k kilometres on the clock outside of regular maintenance it cost me only front and rear drop links and bushes and front shocks. Never failed to start and I did a serious amount of driving around Eire and NI.

I've my first car still after 15 years. Never intend to get rid of it. Passed my test in it and toured Ireland and England in it. It's the most I've spent on a car too, it was 18 months old, back seats or front passenger seat never used, the previous owner unplugged the cig lighter to stop people using it and kept a cover on the driver's seat. Only had 8k on it too. Now has 180k. Before I drove it I got seat covers for the whole car, took out the original mats and put down rubber ones etc.

She was minded like a baby and to this day the interior would pass for a new car. The body has a few parking dents plus I left it sitting for two years at my parents without moving it and the sun has damaged the paint on the bonnet a bit but it's now under cover!

Tis a '98 Jap March with central locking, twin airbags, electric windows, electric door mirrors, abs brakes, cd player, fog lights, alloys and air con, two cup holders and an arm rest with a cool gadget to hang a plastic bag from for your rubbish. Also has a countdown thing to tell you when to service it.

    In fact I've still got all my cars! First was the '98 March, 2nd '86 520i, 3rd '97 Laguna, 4th '86 318i, 5th '92 730i, 6th '05 Focus and 7th '00 A4!!

Sold our first car this week, trade in against a newer car. 01 toyota yaris. Spartan is not the word but that little girl was as reliable as they come. Starting to show her age though so time to move on before she starts costing us a significant portion of her value to keep on the road.

I wont lie, it was difficult to drive away, she was looking right at us! The missues was quite upset as it was her first car, car I learned to drive in, car that got us about when we both first left home and moved to Dublin.

The fact that the better half had named the car years ago and kept referring to it by name didnt help the separation at all!

1995 mk 3 golf. Hated it. Sold it to my mate after 3 months and bought a mk4 which is the one I fondly remember.

Sold that for an e36 320i coupe. Now, that's the car I wish I'd kept.

1995 Renault Clio 1.2l. She was eventually scrapped. Loved that car though. It was my first taste of freedom. It had some quirkes. The radio would only work if you turned on the dips. The central locking would only lock all the doors and not open them. I'd have to open the boot, reach into back seat. Open rear door, reach from rear to front and open drivers door. There always seemed to be a hot girl in the college car park watching that endeavour. The heater was broken and only blew damp smelling air. And the fuse for the indicators blew if you used the hazards. Still tho, loved that car.

Some of you may not now, that my first car was not actually the 3 Series BMW.

At the age of 15, I received a 2001 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 Comfortline as a gift from my parents. I was going to drive it in under two years after I had done my provisional test.

Unfortunately, once my dad lost his job, we were forced to sell the good ole girl. Mighty spec on that car - Climate Control, Full FIS and nowadays crappy Rieger RRX front bumper, Hella MagicColours Black taillights, twin exhaust pipes etc - the definition of a skanger :pac:

But back then it was the bomb 8)
