It looks like the Defence Forces will have a new Chief of Staff come next September according to the Department of Defence.
APPOINTMENT OF NEW CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE DEFENCE FORCES

The Government this morning has accepted the recommendation of the Minister for Defence, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D., to nominate Rear Admiral Mark Mellett for appointment by the President as Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces. He will succeed the current Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Conor O’Boyle, when Lieutenant-General O’Boyle retires in September this year.

Minister Coveney said “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rear Admiral Mellett on his new appointment and I look forward to working closely with him in the future.”

I wonder how will the Army react to the news.

Congratulations to the future Vice Admiral.

I imagine they'll recognise that Rear Adm Dr Mellett is the best candidate and a credit to the Defence Forces and live with it.

    Well deserved, congrats.

Delighted for him! Hopefully great things to come with him overseeing (from sept anyway) the new Whitepaper on Defence's introduction!!!!

Yeah its interesting timing on the White Paper. Mellett comes across as very progressive, you'd suspect if anyone will fight for excellence and modernisation it would be him.

Ceard is brí le 'Vice Admiral' as Gaeilge! Leas-Aimiréal?

This could provide some clues about where the future direction of the DF lies, away from a land dominated force towards a more maritime oriented military. With the NS providing naval assets to the Med it makes sense to focus on bolstering our naval footprint (as long as much needed investment in our Air Corps and Army isn't neglected).
