looking to get a dog and settled on either a Golden Retriever or a Red Setter, but having read all the warnings I'm a bit wary of buying a dog of internet advertisments. Anyone have any contacts for reputable breeders in the East or Midlands? Or any tips once I find one?

Make sure the parents of the pups are hip scored. Do not entertain any breeder that hasn't done this, and make sure they show you the certs to prove they were done and don't just go on their word.

Make sure the score is the average, or below.

Thanks - forgive the ignorance but what is an average or below score? Is there a magic number or will that actualy be on the results?

If you google hip scores for dogs, there is a certain score for each different breed. So you need to check what the average score is for Retrievers and Setters as they are probably different.

Try contacting the breed clubs for advice on breeders. Do not go near donedeal as most breeders are puppy farmers or back yard breeders and wouldnt know what hip scores are if it hit them in the face.

The cert from the BVA will show the scores for each hip, so your breeder will gladly show you what the scores are, once they are reputable (breeders).

See and email for the Golden Rateriver Club on their website, Is there a contact for the Red Setter Club? The phone number on the ikc website seems to go to someone other then the person named so not sure if it's correct!

I don't think they breed dogs, will bear in mind next time I'm looking for a sliced pan though!

I think it was because you spelled breeder as breader in the topic heading...

My 2 year old retriever's dad is from Woodmore kennels and if and when I get another retriever I'll be calling them to find out if they have a litter themselves/if one of their dogs has been used for stud and the other breeder's name. She's just perfect in both temperament and health and we get lots of compliments lol :p I called the breed club btw and they gave me a few names of breeders near me and some further away.

I can Pm you with the details if not allowed to post here but got a really lovely golden retriever pup from a lady near Mullingar earlier in the year and I think another litter planned for the summer (different dam obviously!)

    http://raistin.com/

She is a great pup, very well socialised on getting her, very trainable, lovely temperament, hip scored, family tree goes way back and all health tests and the breeder has a lot of years of experience and involvement with retriever society and loads of advice whenever needed.

Just be prepared for the price though, have found it to be around 650-750 depending on the breeder but gotta say in our girls case, the time, effort and care that went into breeding her and littermates really shows!

Retriever show up in pounds quite a bit, nicer alternative than a breeder.

A well bred retriever from a reputable breeder with no health or behavioral issues (that a novice will struggle to deal with) is a nicer alternative to some - myself included. I have one of each - crappy breeder and reputable breeder and as much as I love them both I know exactly where my next one will come from.

The OP is clearly looking for a purebred pup, not a rescue.
    Please folks, stay on topic.
Do not reply to this post on thread.
    Thanks,

Hehe I wanted to double check before posting but my friend's dog has the same linage as some of their dogs - 'Cesta' was her dad. Some of them in the photo are the image of her!
