I want to take on his name but will I get a new GERMAN passport or an IRISH one?
I dont want to loose my german identity especially if we gonna have kids someday..What is the best option??

Contact the Embassy. You need to apply to have your surname changed (Antrag auf Namensaenderung I think). When you have that, you can then have a new German passport issued under your new surname. You won't lose your German nationality just because you married an Irishman and changed your name.

The Deutsche in London forum has lots of tips for Germans, not only those living in London or the UK and there will almost certainly be someone on there who can help you further.

I can't post the URL as I don't have the requisite number of posts under my belt.

Oh I think I should have explained it better, its not so much about how to get an passport its more the question which one to get going further?Does it make sense to apply for irish citizenship and get an irish passport too?Is that possible to have 2 passports?
But I will try the forum you mentioned Anbocmorrua , thanks!!! :)

I dont think it makes much difference these days! If you want to hold on to your German nationality stick with that. I do know the bureaucracy can make renewal of German documents very difficult if you don't have a German address.

In terms of dual nationality, from the Irish perspective, almost certainly not a problem as long as you meet the criteria. From the German perspective, almost certainly a problem.

Getting your German documents renewed abroad appears to be relatively straightforward. Your local embassy will advise.

Not according to the people I know. Maybe passport is ok, but other things like drivers licenses can be difficult I believe.

You can have two passports. The Germans aren't mad about it, but you can certainly do it. My fiance was born in Germany and holds a German passport, and he applied for, and got, an Irish passport a few years back without having to surrender his German one.

As mentioned already it will not be a problem from the Irish side, but some countries certainly do have an issue.

In the case that a German person wishes to apply for an Irish passport then it will not be an issue, as the Irish authorities will not seek for them to hand over the German passport.

But, conversely, if an Irish person was to apply for a German passport then it would be an issue, as the Irish person would have to surrender the Irish passport. But, and I have had someone from an Irish embassy tell me this, although 'off the record' of course, one then merely reports your Irish passport missing and you can then get issued with a new one (there is an associated cost of course).
