    Avensis without a doubt.

Interesting you would say that. I thought you'd have leant towards either of the Skodas.

Why the 1.6 ardee? Hardly for moron tax. If you are limiting yourself to thar I wouldn't go for the superb......gutless. The 2.0 is a different kettle of fish. Lovely car, smooth quick and comfortable. Economical too.
Don't like the Avensis, too plasticy
Have you been in a Mondeo

Irish conditioned thinking I'd say, buy the smallest engine available on the premise that smaller means more economical.

That's true. I know people with the 1.6 diesel and 2.0 diesel Octavia and the 2.0 is more economical. The reason, the 2.0 doesn't have to work as hard to move the car.

Stay away from the 1.6 in the mondeo too. The 2.0 is better able for the car, and so far outweighs any saving on tax.

Irish conditioned me ass. The 1.6 can barely power the Air Condition and the car.:p

    Avensis without a doubt.

Would've been my second choice(back in the day) compared to the 01-05 1.9Tdi Passat, and probably was in ways a better choice, but that was then!?... I'm hearing more and more 'horror' stories on Toyotas that are pushed beyond normal everyday driving(strangely enough 07 yokes mostly) and now a friend of mine(fellow taxi driver) has just informed me that the head gasket gave up on his 2011 Avensis, he only informed me yesterday as I queried 'how she was on diesel and had he any major problems', constantly hearing good reports on 09< Skodas, some of you are probably right about the 1.6Tdi Engine not being up to hauling round the body hence burning more fuel! I'm not so sure, she is a relatively small saloon, and quite a big boot capacity..... Anyway I'll keep researching and keep me informed of any pros or cons you guys come across. Thank You :)

If you ask enough people about any make/model of car someone will have a horror story to relate!

All I can say is that in our experience of selling and servicing a lot of cars of that class and age that the Avensis is pretty much trouble free compared to the other options.

Insignia/Passat/Mondeo/Superb all have their issues and I wouldn't say there is a huge difference in running costs between any of them on average.

Now having said that if I was in the market for a car in that class I wouldn't buy an Avensis. The Avensis is slow compared to the other options (when comparing 2.0 vs 2.0 at any rate) and the spec is poor unless you go for the Strata model and they command a serious premium. I would rather put up with a certain amount of maintenance costs in return for a car that I was happier to spend time in every day. But that is just personal preference. Some people just want a car to get them from A to B without any nasty surprises in the form of repair bills and that is totally understandable. Those people should buy a Toyota IMO.
