Hiya lads, still in the process of selling my current luxobarge, but I've started to look at something I could buy after I sell it.

So far, those cars are the cheapest to run (fuel/tax/insurance wise)

    1. 2005 VW Passat B6 2.0 TDI DSG
    2. 2004 Audi A3 2.0 TDI DSG
    3. 2005 Volvo S40/V50 2.0D Manual
    4. 2002 BMW E46 320d Manual

I have owned an E46 before, although it was a 2.2 Coupe M-Sport, so not much of a comfy car, but it was excellent to drive.

My parents have an 06 V50 2.0D, so I'm okay with them comfort/reliability wise.

I haven't however had much experience with the A3 or the Passat.

Which of these would you say is the best choice in terms of a daily driver that can get me from home to work and back in decent comfort with good economy and with a good reliability record? I hear horror stories of those 2.0 TDIs and DSG boxes, although I have heard horror stories about the Volvos too (which turned out to be much more reliable than anything I have owned).

with the bmw and the audi , they are cheap to run but at that age can be troublesome and expensive to fix . + side is they are nice places to be and the bmw drives really well

Passat eill be very dull to drive but cheap enough to run .

volvo will be most modern looking and reasonable to run but possible a tad slow

volvo would prob be the most sensible option

I'd second the Volvo. It's the best looking and certainly the best made. The build quality of the others doesn't compare.

I don't think it would be any slower than the others. Probably faster than the Passat and I'm very sceptical of BMW performance figures. They always seem to claim much higher than people ever achieve.

Ps. I also heard horror stories about a Volvo I went and bought. 100,000 miles later and its just gone to a new home with 200k miles on the clock. Never cost me anything outside of scheduled maintenance and a refurbished of the throttle body.
