so rte are again interefereing with the format of the angelus, they should leave it alone it reflects the catholic ethos of the country, if there are people who object to it let them switch off or go and live in another country, if you agree with the above ring the dg in rte and make your views known to him.

To be honest if Ireland is a secular state then no one should really have much of an issue with the Angelus.

I thought it was funny how RTÉ want to take the name away from it, but they did that back in the 2000s when they ditched the art work from the bells, it never caught on and the CAs and Radio presenters quickly went back to calling it the Angelus.

To be honest there are more pressing problems with Irish TV than less than a minute of 18 bells. e.g just 45% of viewer watch Irish TV

Most likely it will be replace by someone rambling on about something, I'd rather white noise.

    Hmm

Unless of course your Not a devout Irish Roman Catholic!

What about Church of Ireland people, Methodists, Presbyterians, and all other Irish Christians, not forgetting the vast majority of RCs who don't watch or listen to it either!
What about non Christians, non believers, Irish Muslims, Hindoos, Jews & Seiks?

Must we all leave the country ;)

I say park the Angelus, and consign it to the history books, its had its day.

RTE have always contacted the heads of all of the Irish churches about the Angelus and all have said it is a good thing for a moment of reflection. This was one of the reasons RTE changed the format and tried to change the name in the mid-2000s in consultation with the other non-Catholic/non-Christian churches. They may need to re-examine it with those churches.

TBH I think a bigger problem is that this year RTE will have only produced 4 hours of Drama in 2015 (I exclude Fair City). But if you want a religious distraction go for it.

Wow, that's staggeringly low. Had it ever been much higher? Is it possible to get figures for 18-25?

In 2006 it was at 65%.

Figures are hard to come by.

Thanks. Lower than I would have guessed. Needless to say, will become increasingly hard to justify license fee.

It will become increasingly hard to justify Irish TV channels. RTÉ isn't squashing TV3 or UTV Ireland.

Should 7 minutes out of a weekly 10,800 really bother anyone?

This whole free advertising malarkey. Firstly I'd wonder if anyone outside the Catholic faith knows what the Angeles is, there is no explanation given and it gives no times or dates of upcoming Catholic services. For that matter I'd say I know few catholic's who went to so called Catholic schools in the 80s, 90s and 00s that even know what the Angeles is.

IMO 4 hours of Drama in 2014, just 4!

Also its 17 bells, it doesn't run for a whole minute.

Some numbers attached to show the state of each and (nearly) every channel in share.

Edit - I added a second graphic - a repeat of the first in a way - but with the viewing from 2005 as a comparison - the additions of stations have really fragmented viewing and hit the 'established' stations here. Its 2014 v 2005 and therefore UTV is not UTV Ireland!

    2005 (2006 was a better year AFAIK)
    55% plus UTV 60%
    2014
    43% plus UTV 45%

    July 2015
    41% plus UTV 41.5%
