Issue with new car

Bought a petrol 2005 avensis today and parked up to go into a shop. Car wouldn't start and all you hear is a click. Called out a 24 hour guy for 40 euro and he tried the battery which wasn't the issue. He hit something with a long pole in the bonnet and car started right away. He said to bring it into his garage tomorrow as problem with starter probably just dirt.

I drove the car for 40 km before this and engine is fine. Also test drove it for 20 km and was fine and engine is perfect. Also started the car four or five times on the test drive. Just wondering if it's something I can do myself? I rang the owner who was a nice women and was very apologetic and said it never happened before.

Private sale so no warranty. Fresh NCT as well. 95000 miles. It started a few times after the mechanic got it going when I brought it home. Any idea of the cost of this? Just hear the click again when I turn the key. Thanks for the advice so far. I'm thinking now it doesn't start when the engine is a bit hot. Just want to know whst to tap in the morning to get it going. It's perfect car otherwise. Mechanic seems to think it's dirt.
