Parental leave affecting your maternity benefit on second pregnancy

    Hi, I was wondering if anyone happens to know the answer to this question for me.
    I'm due to go back to work at the end of September this year after having had my first baby in September 2014. I was planning on returning on a 4 day week taking one day as parental leave.
    I am expecting my second baby in January 2016 and wondering if I will still be entitled to the full €210 maternity benefit as I was on my first if I take this parental leave or should I go back (I'll be back at work for 13/14 weeks before leaving again) full time?

    Can you check with HR where you work?
    I would have thought it does count as full time even though you are using parental leave though. Just like using annual leave still means you are working full time.

    Social insurance contributions
    The Minister for Social Protection has introduced Regulations to ensure preservation of social insurance (PRSI) records for employees who take parental leave. Your employer must write to the Records Update Section of Department of Social Protection (DSP), detailing the weeks you have not worked, so that you can get credited PRSI contributions for this time (see 'Where to apply' below). You can find information about credited contributions and parental leave on the DSP website.

    I had one day parental leave a week between my two children and got the full rate of maternity benefit on the second child. No harm to double check with HR but the basic rule of parental leave is that you shouldn't be in any way disadvantaged by taking parental leave so it should be ok.

    Maternity benefit is based on prsi from two years previous so it should have no impact
