I bought a second hand car in Oct/Nov 2015 and traded in my old car.
last week i received a fixed charge offence from the An Garda for failure to display a current vehicle licence (on the car i traded in),

I called the dealer and he asked me to send him a photocopy of the offence,

My question is should I be going to the garda about this or the Vehicle Reg offices or will I just ask the car dealer to sort this out?

not sure what to do or where to go.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    You mean Oct/Nov 2014?

I would try the Garda first, so at least they know why you haven't paid up. Then I would contact the dealer, maybe even go to them in person.

You can request the fixed charge notice (FCN) to be cancelled on the basis that the car should not be registered in your name . Use the cancellation procedure described in the Garda website. If you have a receipt from the trade-in (which you should have somewhere) then send a copy to the Garda fixed charge office. It may further support your case if you can also to show you transferred your insurance policy from the old car to the new e.g. statement from insurer or copies of old & new policies. A written confirmation from the dealer should also help.
