2001 Ford Focus Fan Belt

Wife 's old car parked up for about 6 months , decided to start it up a couple of days ago, charged up the battery and it started first turn of the key. Delighted but it was shortlived, I noticed smoke coming from fan belt area and fan belt came flying off. On inspection of fan belt it did appear to be somewhat perished and the tension pulley wheel was also damaged...( a plastic wheel about 2 inches in diameter). I managed to source the plastic wheel at a scrapyard for 10 Euro and a new replacement fan belt from a motor factors. I have now fitted those two items and started the car again.... the fan belt got extremely hot and was just about to start smoking before I cut the engine off.... the pulley wheel on the alternator was also hot to touch. I am wondering what could be the reason for this? Thanks in advance for any advice given.

Did you check the alternator pulley that it is spinning free?

Yes (Thanks for reply) ...just checked it now, was stiff, used large socket and plenty of WD40 to free it and presto!...however battery light now comes on when engine is ticking over, however checked the battery with a multimeter and it is getting charged... wonder what this could be?

    I'd be replacing the alternator.

Battery light on the dash indicates a faulty altinator, it's nothing to do with the battery.
Similarly, and just for reference the oil light indicates low oil pressure not low oil level.

Yeah am aware of that, that is why I checked the battery with a multimeter while engine running...reading of 14 volt as opposed to 12.9 volts in non running state...this would indicate that battery is being charge by the alternator... so why the warning light?

Check the small wires going to the alternator. They have been known to break.
