Lads my wife is self employed and owes Tax(grrrr)
Anyway she has been sent a sheriffs letter and told she cannot pay the money off in instalments. This seems a bit harsh but I'm just wondering does anyone have any experience of this type of situation??

    Hello Shannonman81,

I have it on good authority that the sheriff will enter into an instalment arrangement. Best thing is not to wait until they arrive at the door, but make contact with them, explain your predicament and make an offer to pay off the debt in instalments. Unless they suspect that you're spoofing and hiding thousands under the matress, they will entertain a reasonable proposal. If you're talking serious money they may go into a little bit of detail and look for bank statements and maybe a set of the last accounts.

Like most things in life, you can negotiate your way through these type of challenges. Be upfront and honest and you should get a sympathetic hearing. If you have an accountant - eventhough that may cost some money - get him or her to do the talking for you. They are on familiar ground and deal with Revenue and Sheriffs on a very regular basis.

    Best of luck

    Cheers,
    Rudolf289
