Looking out the window here and see at least 4 or 5 bonfires in a one mile radius, not having one myself this year,
Thought that in this PC gone mad World that some crowd would emerge to insist on 'banning' Bonfire night.

Not a thing down this part of the world.

    What's it for?

Saint johns night, when we were younger we would spend the few days before hand gathering as many tyres etc etc to create the fire. Compertitoon was fierce to see whose bonfire was the biggest. it's an old tradition to do with mid summer and the longest day.

As far as I know it originates from a pagan religious ceremony of lighting a bonfire on night of 23rd of June to thank the Gods in the hope of bountiful crops.
Is a big thing up the west Coast anyway.

Can see 10 or more from here. Great to keep the tradition going, had a few fires here, just bushes tho that I gathered with the digger.

When I was doing the reps course the lecturer said whatever you do don't throw that old sofa on the bonfire :) I'd say 90% of bonfires tonight are used to clear yards of rubbish.

neighbour was reported last week for burning heaps of bushes without pre notifying the authorities , guardai & fire officer called out , he does'nt know if he 'll hear more about it

we burned some on the outfarm, just dialled 999 in the morning , got through to the relevant section, answered a few questions & was told to work away, requested to ring back at 10pm that evening if we thought the fire would be somderling over night

I'm not a farmer, hope you don't mind me edging in on your conversation :pac:

I'm from Donegal myself, bonfire night used to be a big community thing with us. The four estates in the village would each have a bonfire and you'd go around to see them all, and then some people (including ourselves) would have their own bonfires too.

I'm living in Dublin a long time now, no one over here has even heard of the practice (though I live in Ballymun, so there are bonfires here regularly enough :P ) and talking to my sister she said there were no fires last night that she saw or heard of.

I'm not that old - only thirty - so it's not that long since the tradition has waned. Is it the burning laws that have caused it?

Sorry to hijack the thread but I was under the impression that burning could only be carried out between September and March? Or does that only apply to growing vegetation?

I have a few piles of bushes that I cut over the winter and would ideally burn them in dry weather if I thought I wouldn't face sanctions from Dept of Ag or trouble from Gardai or the fire servive.

Plenty of bonfires within sight of me in Mayo last night...

Never knew ya could do it by ringing 999. Dad was reported years ago for burning but there happened to be a local lad in the station who rang the house to see if he was out burning, dad would never leave a fire to go out of control.

999 is for emergencies only if you are going burning you need to contact your local fire station to let them know.
