How long for emergency tax to be sorted out?

I started my first job around a month ago but I didn't know I had to fill out a 12a form and I only realised after seeing I was taxed an unholy amount. I filled out and sent away the form to the local revenue office today. How long until it'll all get sorted? Will the amount that was taken off as emergency tax just be paid into my next wage?

The Revenue will process your form once they get it, and advise your employer of your correct tax credits and allowances.

Once your employer has that they will update their payroll system with it and you will be automatically refunded anything you are due.

Generally Revenue are fairly quick with this sort of stuff and sort it out no later than a week or two, especially if your employer has Revenue Online software that they use.

Hope you don't mind me piggy backing on this.
Its also about Form 12A. Is there any advantage
in calling to the Revenue Office rather than posting it?

They're taking marginally longer than I'd have expected to process 12As currently - know of an application (not me!) where Revenue phoned to clarify the employer's PAYE number mid last week and nothing's arrived as yet. When I got my first tax cert many moons ago it took all of two days.

I work in payroll and am advising people that Form 12As are taking up to 4 or 5 weeks to process at the moment. It's been like this for the past few months. Revenue can be quite slow at processing manual forms unfortunately. In a few cases we've received tax certs within 2 weeks of the forms being sent, but most of the time it's taking longer.

OP be aware that Emergency Tax has 3 stages so until this is sorted you could be hit even harder (but you will be refunded once you have your tax cert).

In the first 4 weeks/1 month you will get the personal tax credit and single person cut-off point.

In weeks 5-8/2nd month, you won't get a tax credit, but you will still get the single person cut-off point.

From weeks 9/month 3 onwards, you won't get any credits or cut-off, so you will be paying the highest rates of tax on your entire gross pay (52% in total).

Arrived today. Assume they've sent the employer the credits via ROS already, but you'd never know.
