I moved over to RedFM when Neilox moved there, but now I find podcasts more attractive.

    So 96FM v RedFM... discuss

Red sounding great now. I never listen to 96fm now I tried listening to pj but its painful they're usually talking about your fav chocolate bar or reminising about old cork.

Red Fm seem to be targeting the over 30's during the morning/afternoon.

Just look at their Facebook page (Promotion Nights in Voodoo Rooms). Most of the people pictured were 40+.

Shouldn't the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) remind RedFM that it's supposed to be aiming for a youth audience?

Well i certainly do not think that Neil Prenderville appeals to the youth audience.

I used to listen to Red fm, then they got Neil, and almost immediately started playing old songs, I switched it on one day and they were playing Simply Red?! A song that wasn't even good when it was released so it sounds worse now!

Red Fm basically tried to turn themselves into 96fm so now I listen to Today FM!

Im another Today FM lad. I listen to Neil on the repeat at night if im in the car but purely cos theres nothing better on at that time.
If i had to pick from the 2 it would be Red FM tho, by a country mile.

I listen to 96FM in the morning when on the school run, I find their traffic reports are fairly bang on and are very regular.
The secret sound is cringe though, it's real 'college radio' stuff.

RedFM has a good dance music slot on Friday evenings, some decent house etc. but Radio na Gaeltachta has an even better one so I flip between the two.

Other than the above it's Newtalk and Radio 1 the rest of the time.

Listen to 96fm most of the time, could not be listening to prenderville he annoys the crap out of me..

Mind you I wish the music was better on it, but that goes to the same for 4fm and most of them

Phillip Burke plays the 80's songs aswell.

96fm is awful. Same rubbish music all the time. And PJ Coogans show is really silly. Stupid discussions on meaningless topics. Redfm is a bit better.

Red fm has more than doubled its audience I 12 months and is up in the under 35s. I have often heard young people contributing to niels show and quite well too.

I was listening to Red fm but these days i am more into Today Fm, 96fm lately every time i am in the car and flicking through the stations they are either on an ad break or playing some really old annoying song,

Red fm still play's good music and i guess i like that Kc has brought some of the music today fm plays back to Red fm, they definitely play more rock/indie/alternative than they used to.

the cure was played the other morning. so out of the two Cork ones Red fm all the way.

I generally only listen to the radio before and after work.

    Redfm for me.
KC show in the morning is very good, I'd listen to it until a sh*t song comes on then switch to 2fm for the Breakfast Show (with Bernard, Jen and the Other Guy!).
General ping pong between both those shows.

RedFM are trying too hard to be 96FM and there's only room for one of those 20-44 adult contemporary stations in Cork. There's no station to cater for the 15-34 market ala Spin, Beat or iRadio, which is why it's no wonder that there's still a thriving commerical dance pirate market in Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,477 ✭✭✭grenache

Puzzled as why people are complaining about Red playing pre-2000 music now. Think it's generally accepted that music was, in general, better back then? Them playing older stuff has made it a bit more bearable at work where my boss won't listen to anything else. Most of the contemporary stuff they repeat every hour is shocking.

96 play the same songs day in, day out, they seem to be obsessed with Michael Bublé in particular

I'd listen to Prendiville over PJ Coogan in the mornings, mostly because I can't stand the voice on that Deirdre girl that's on with PJ - anyone who speaks like that shouldn't be let anywhere near a microphone.

In general, us citizens of Cork have a poor choice when it comes to radio - for a city of 200k and county of the same size again, there should be a much better variety of local station. CUH Radio is actually quite good when it's not broadcasting mass or playing country & western. When one considers the limited budget it works off, it really puts Red & 96 to shame.

if you consider though the majority of Teenagers who listen to dance music these days have access to itunes/spotify/youtube/internet radio..etc and being part of the "Instant" generation they have a low tolerance to wait for the news/ads to be over, before then having to wait until some dj plays the song they want? they will just use another music service. it makes sense for Red Fm to cater to the alternative market of those who listen in their cars/offices..etc aka 20-44 market...

take 2fm for example they tried to stay in the 15-34 market playing newer and more dance music and their numbers would have them wiped out but for the fact they are owned by RTE means they are still on air.

This is what 96 (and 103 believe it or not..) are licenced for in Cork, 25-44 year olds. No point in 2 stations targeting one market and no station targeting another. Both Spin stations, both iRadio stations, and Beat 102 103 seem to target this market rather successfully.

This change has only happened in the last 15 months. Before that they were playing a mish mash of all kinds of music both new old that had no target audience, hence the dropping figures. In the last year they have refined their playlist to target a younger age, however it's the presenters at the moment that are the issue, not the music

I second that 'secret Sound' thing- it's the most annoying thing to listen to. I find it grates on me- it just goes on and on. I'm in the early 30's age group and personally find Radio 1 the best in the mornings to hear what's going on- I switch between that and96fm for the traffic- although Wayne in the plane doesn't spot everything, he tends to love flying over blackpool which isn't on my route to work!

what drives me mad about red fm is that prenderville is repeated too often/ too early. turn it on in the morning and prenderville is on but then again at 11 o clock at night he is back on again as a repeat. spend a lot of time in the tractor listening to the radio and could easily be on it at both those times and don't want to hear the same show twice. leave them replay it at 1/2 am onwards and that would be appropriate. similarly hate that's its replayed again sunday morning around 12 o clock. honestly I don't think radios should be allowed to repeat a show but instead have some different show.

the one thing about red fm that annoys me is kc's sidekick all he does is laugh at everything, he is ment to be there for comedy but kc makes the jokes and he just laughs.

red fm have great shows like big red bench and green on red but there midweek evening shows with bucks and Philip Burke are just bland and offer nothing

Theyre both utterly dire stations,we are really unlucky when it comes to radio in Cork.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,088 ✭✭✭SpaceTime

That "Live from the centre of Ireland's greatest city" tag on 96fm news is just cringe inducing too.

I'm not saying Cork isn't a nice city but it's very indicative of a certain level of insecurity. Thought we were past that?!

If 98fm or FM 104 in Dublin were doing it I'd need a sick bag too.

When C103 was licenced it was the 25-44 year old station for the county (originally completely seperate stations) and when 96FM launched it was the city 25-44 year old station, neither were connected with each other. For various reasons (typical Ireland stuff..), this is how it finished up.

Obviously C103 are no longer targetting the 25-44 y/o market.

96FM launched as Radio South in 1989 (founded by four journalists from the Examiner I believe) It had a very diverse range of programming, specialist shows, talk show at drive time, chart music at nightime etc.
C103 launched as County Sound in 1990 with studios and opt outs from Bandon and Mallow. Radio South was purchased by County Sound in 1990/1991 and relaunched as Classic Hits 96FM playing a hits and memories format. Almost all of the specialist shows were removed other than oldies & Irish. From then on the two stations shared resources for news and were networked overnight and in the evenings.

That continued until a few years ago when county sound rebranded as c103. They closed their Bandon studios after flood damage in 2009 and now broadcast almost exclusively from the old Majestic Ballroom near Gouldshill in Mallow. I don't think there is much networked programming going on anymore. Both C103 and 96FM have expanded their coverage to be countywide over the years.

As for Redfm, they launched in 2001/2002. Their format didn't change much until last year when they persuaded Neil Prendeville to move from 96FM and poached KC back from Today FM.
There are other non commercial stations too. Cork campus Radio 98.3 CUHFM 102.0 Life FM 93.1 Cork FM 100.5 Colaiste Stiofain Naofa have a temporary station Juice FM during the college year.

I agree, I had been listening to Nick Richards up until recently but the last 2 mornings I have put on Radio 1 and I actually quite enjoyed it; keeps me up to date with the latest happenings in the world :D

On the way home also I have started listening to RTE radio 1. I used to always listen to Will Leahy on 2FM but then they got rid of him and put Colm Hayes in (they are now replacing him with Eoghan McDermott - even worse!). I used to just have 96fm on but the music was just the same every day - you could nearly predict what's going to come on next! I find it's nearly better not to listen to any music now.

PJ on the radio is awful -guy needs to be moved on -one thing he hasn't to put up with is that annoying woman that wrecks neills show by constantly butting in talking rubbish.

Haven't seen the actual figures but I can't tell the difference between what they're both claiming. Both seem to say they have the most listeners for every show throughout the day. There must be some subtle difference, one for the county or city, or in a certain age group or something.

    Edit: Results are available here.

Looks like RedFM wins for under 35s and 96FM everything above.

Which ever age market each station is ahead in they generalize and then they spin it too sound like everyone listens too that station

prefer PJ coogan to Prendeville, also sunday nights for the 80s music on 96fm.

That said I listen to the local stations in Limerick a lot as I'm only a blow in to Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 870 ✭✭✭overmantle

I used to listen to Red FM because I just couldn't stomach Prendeville when he was on 96FM. Once he moved, I changed to 96FM, or Today FM. Red FM is finished, as far as I'm concerned. I just cannot understand how people can listen to the trash that guy goes on with.

red fm is awful, anything that happens on the ridiculous prendercille show is them made out to be the top story in the news,

The ironic thing is red fm would be a better station without prenderville and his complete **** programme

But its only since np joined that their numbers have increased substantially.

Red Fm were being hammered by 96fm in the mornings before Prenderville and KC came to the station.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭Justin Credible Darts

true, but some people believe it or not might actually listen to red fm other shows and not for the wanker prenderville.

I listen to 96fm in the mornings but red fm in the afternoon at work, could not tolerate prenderville

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

TBH - Both stations are utter sh!te. I did listen to 96fm going to work as the traffic news is something I would be interested in. Now - I don't even listen to that! The Secret Sound is getting right up my pipe now - has no-one won that money yet and put us ALL our of our misery???

4FM is the best of an awful bunch musically. Newstalk or dead silence for me! :D

truth is the only reason the radio is on at all is so that I dont have to listen to others gossiping about mundane ****
