Insurance on car (buying privately)

Hi all, I couldn't find this using the search, but I'm a bit confused on what an insurance company (25+) told me.

I'm buying a car next week. I want to have the insurance sorted so I can drive it straight away (only a named driver on another policy at the moment). Insurance company is telling me I can't get insured on it till the current owner cancels his insurance. How does this work? He'll be driving it up until the day I take it, so it seems like this'll be a hassle to sort out on the day.

    Any advice?

    Cheers.

Buy the car during office hours and call to insure your new car after you sign the VLC.

Try and take out the policy now and ask the insurance company if is possible to suspend the commence date until the day you are collecting the car. On the day you are collecting the car ring them first to verify that the policy will commence.

If they have the driving other cars cover on their insurance get the driver of the car you are named driver on to drive the car back to your house and then you sort out insurance. I have driven cars back for friends before when they have bought cars and not had cover transferred.

Cheers for the advice guys. So it seems that the insurance company was blowing hot air, or is it a thing that they can see that the car is already insured and won't insure it till they get confirmation that the other person has cancelled their insurance?

You can't insure something you don't yet own so they are probably coming at it from this angle.

Just in case someone else comes across this thread. Turns out the guy I'm buying it off is insured with the same company as I was trying to buy with, so they could see that he still had it insured under his name. As soon as he changes his over, I should be able to sort mine out.

The one problem here is he might be slow in cancelling/suspending / transferring his policy for a day or two

Update again. I got the guy to cancel his policy at about half 4, and ended up on hold with the company for ages and ages while they worked it out. They kept telling me he hadn't cancelled and also that they couldn't tell me anything about his policy for data protection.

Eventually after I'd been on hold for the guts of a half hour, they came back and processed my details, while still insisting that his policy was active. My insurance was active from half 5 that day, so happy out.
