    I know Solicitors generally charge a percentage fee in the case of a property or will transaction. Im wondering how much would it cost to get legal advice on a matter where you are just paying for time?

    You need to ring around, prices will vary. A lot will depend on whether you are going to a large firm, or small firm, to the managing partner or a newly qualified solicitor. Also the time it will take. Your question is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.

    The majority (I would guess) of property transactions are a fixed fee plus outlays. Phone round, in many matters a solicitor (in Dublin at least) will give a short initial consultatrion for free.

    I consulted a Solicitor in the past year for

    * free (nice chap, but didn't seem interested)
    * 45 euro (ok)
    * 100 euro (better results)

    so I suggest you insist on paying,
    I think solrs get alot of tyre kickers

    It always seems odd to me that "value" is measured in time rather than satisfaction with the service. Good advice which takes 15 minutes to give should be of more value than bad advice which takes 30mins, yet time seems to be the measure of value. Go figure.

    The classic dilemma which faces everybody deciding how to charge or pay is whether to price by job or time. The person who gives good advice in 15 mins will soon presumably have a greater demand for their service and the price will go up. Some tax practitioners charge €1k per hour. It is better to pay a plasterer who does the job properly in a day more than a plodder who takes a week to do a mediocre job. Same with solicitors and accountants. The same applies to lawyers, doctors or dentists. Anyone seeking to avail of their services should research the reputation of the person they approach. It is not like buying an overcoat. .

    Little off-topic, but if you do go in for a consultation, have everything written down and organised as best you can.

    It's a waste of everyone's time if you are meandering for ages without purpose.

    Better off leaving that to the brief, eh? Eh eh? ;)

    Four folders? Isn't this an expedited appeal?

    Yes, that's why there aren't six

    "If I might just briefly refer to the book of authorities..."

    *4 days later*

    "And the second authority is..."
