Can was in for test earlier passed everything except the emissions. Tester said he couldn't do it because the exhaust is leaking in a few places. He said the major one was at a flange before the cat, am i right in thinking i could just remove it clean the surface and seal it again with an exhaust sealer and that would be it? Or is it a bigger job then that?

Probably better off putting a new box on it but yes you could do as you say replace the gasket.

Don't put exhaust sealer before the cat.

If it's not rusted up and just a gasket gone, then you might get away with just replacing the gasket.
Up to you if you want to work on it yourself or bring to an exhaust centre. There's usually a fair bit of beating involved in getting off rusty parts welded together.
