Bought the passat in March, It's a highline. Love some parts of the car big comfortable half leather nice toys. But it's dog slow and absolutely drinks petrol. Really considering selling it and getting a 320i instead.

What do people think? Will I see much of an improvement in performance and economy? Nice car to drive?

I don't do anywhere near the mileage for a diesel and it's nearly all town driving so has to be petrol.

What year 320i are you talking about? There was an upgrade in power to around 170bhp sometime in 2007. BTW the E90 will be alot smaller on the inside and boot compared to the Passat.

Passat was also available in 1.8 (160bhp) and 2.0 (150bhp) though they are rare. Honda Accord is worth looking at too.

As Bazz said the 320i got 170bhp in September 2007 I believe. Before that it was about 150bhp.

Upgrading to a 320 you'll notice a big difference. Fuel consumption will be the same if not a bit better, comfort will be slightly less due to sportier suspension and possible RfT tyres.

I'd go for it. A well specced E90 is a good car.

Looking at an 06 same as the Passat. Hoping to get around 4500 for the passat so 07 a bit of my price range unfortunately.

I'd happily take a drop in space for more performance so don't mind the smaller size.

What sort of spec should I be looking for?

M Sports are usually the best spec but it really depends on the individual car and how the original owner speced it from the factory. Normally base ES models are less desirable and miserable places to be.

Audi A4 1.8t is worth looking at too, not as nice as the 3 Series to drive but it has 163bhp so will feel quicker.

The 2007 and onwards cars had the efficient dynamics pack which includes stop start. These cars gave a lot of problems with coil packs - not sure if BMW have sorted this out at this stage. The 150bhp cars don't seem to have these issues.

The 1.8t is a good alternative. If it was me i'd hold out for a 2.0T (200bhp) A4 or passat. The more modern engine is a good bit smoother than the 1.8t and won't be much worse on petrol.

This one is an estate but looks quite nice

Passat 2.0 FSI was 150bhp afaik.

Audi A6 is worth a look at too:

VW offered a red i FSI passat which has the turbo in addition to the standard FSI with 150BHP. A6 is a good shout but i personally hate the red LCD display which most Irish cars seem to have.
