Bora Stuck in Reverse Gear

    Reversed into the parking spot outside my house and went to put it back into 1st gear. It pops out of reverse but can't be put into any other gear. You can put it back into reverse and it drives in reverse but nothing else. If you take it out of reverse and leave out the clutch it starts making the noise it would if not put into reverse properly? I've tried forcing it out, no good. I've tried everything with the car on and off and using the clutch etc. The transmission fluid is not low.

    1.4L Volkswagen Bora

    What's the problem and what's the fix?

    it could be a number of things;
    Heavily worn release bearing or
    Broken clutch plate spring(s) or
    Broken/damaged selector forks

    Whatever it is, the gearbox will need to come out and you will need a new clutch most likely.

    Thankfully all I had to do was reach into the engine bay and yank it out of gear. If was simply stuck, probably because I was parked on a hill putting pressure on it.
