Had 2007 car for 4 weeks and it was cat-c wrote off. I'm going to keep it and fix up but have a letter from tax office about the tax for this period. Under the new changes, have I still to pay the tax

You should have declared it off the road within 10 days of you becoming the owner. Easiest option is to "transfer" the car to a family member and then "transfer" it back to you to clear it or else pay the minimum amount of tax which is 3 months.

    Why a family member

Easiest to do, in most cases.

Could be anyone, could be the first man you meet sitting at the bar in your local, just needs to be someone you can trust who doesn't decide to challenge the ownership when you look for it back :D

No, your fixing it up and not driving it.

So if I owe 6 months tax on a car, I changevit into someone elses name then I don't owe it no more?,

correct. You then change it back to your name when you want to tax it and put it on the road

Would the tax man not chase you for the bill

no. The tax isn't actually owed unless you put the car back on the road. Once it becomes someone elses car, the tax disappears. (scandalous but true)

Strange that one but I expect that will be sorted soon when europe find out about it. For now, I'm chuffed it isn't changed for now.

Is that the same with a non write of car, as in if someone doesn't pay tax for 8 months, doesn't get stopped by guards in this time, change ownership then no tax owed for them 8 months?
