    Lads,

A neighbour wants to buy silage ground off me, he will pay me per bale and he will pay the contractor. I don't have to do anything.

But what's the going rate per bale around €9? It's a good clean crop.

Why not sell per kg dm?

If I was taking meadow by the bale I'd be mowing at max leaf stage tedding twice and prob only getting 5/acre. That wouldn't be much good to you €50/ acre.

The bales would have 300kg/dm worth about €60 each. 800 kg bale at 40% dm would be 320 kgdm at .20c/kg.

Took silage next door at €15/bale and I did rest great value as I decided when to mow

I'm in same situation last few years, I getting €12 and €14 for decent stuff. In situation now where a fella wants 2nd cut. He will fertilise, probably just nitrogen. Not sure what to charge him for that.

So you were getting them prices with him paying the contractor?

Its two different fellas that buy of me and yes they pay contractor not sure how much. I think around €9 a bale. €12 guy will pay going out the gate other fella its sfp time which can be a pain waiting for him. Slow to pay.

Lads here will say I'm robbing them but my prices didn't change in the bad years of 2012/2013 when everyone wanted silage. Fields are closed off from November and lads don't cut til end of May June and get decent crops.

0.7.30 was €420 and CAN €325 this year. If you are to replace the p and k, pay contractor to spread fertiliser or your own time and diesel. You shouldn't be selling for anything less than €10 a bale. I think Pudsey did figures before on replacing p * k for a bale of silage and it was around €8.

Lads that buy of me are upping their stock numbers, not losing their own ground to silage and keeping good grass under their stock all year around.

Ah well only put out abit of gran lime. So I don't need to add fertilizer costs.

Your forgetting the P & K he's taking out the gate. That had to be replaced.

You do if you want to get the field back in good condition though. Frazz or some other of the big dairy lads here will know their stuff more so than me.

But I think its 20units p and 125 k for first cut of silage. 90 N I think. Your lime costs then. Fert is bloody pricey the last year or two so if you want to keep indexes up you would want to be getting €10 a bale and €12 or more to be making a profit. Takes a bit of fert to keep those indexes up.

I don't do it but ya also have to factor in spraying, reseeding and general land costs. I know its just a once off for you but if you are going to sell every year.

Would you be bothered if first cut was taken early ie light crop 5/acre?

I wouldn't mind Frazz but if only 5 bales per acre not sure what I would have to charge. One lad cut early May last year and I had some nice after grass first week in June.

Only problem is I'm over west so it was Mid April again Fert on this year. Feck all sun in May so grass was slow to grow this year.

I bought sp silage this year by the load, it's really the only way to buy quality grass silage. I've been told that a contractor locally has a weigh cell fitted to a wrapper and gives a printout so fair to all. Price can then be per kg dm.
