Scrappage Deals

Does anyone know of any scrappage deals out there?
My 13 year old car has finally come to the end of life, kids are a bit older and we are thinking of buying something new/ nearly new and was wondering is there any scrappage deals that would take a clapped out passat worth its weight in scrap metal.
Do they only take their own? i.e would Hyundai take a volkswagen on the 4000 scrappage scheme they are running.( that is the only scrappage scheme I know of)
Looking at spending about 20k, with half of it financed, so any recommendations of a Passat/ Octavia type, size car to buy or avoid would be appreciated also

Just realise when they advertise 4k scrappage allowance the cars have to below a certain age, have nct etc..I.e they need to have some monetary value so the garage can sell them on themselves and recoup the money as much as possible. As far as I know they are under no obligation to scrap them. Can't see you getting 4k for a car worth in the hundreds. Make sure you read the small print. Opel doing one at the moment on Insignia anyway, current offer expires end of June

Knew there would be a catch. My car failed its NCT and thats what has forced my hand.
So basically I may forget about the 4k scrappage and decide my car is worth 300 euros. Will have a look at the insignia.

I was considering scrapping my 00 mazda against a peugeot and was talking to a dealer on the phone about that option. He didnt seem to bothered if it had an nct, tax or anything, at least not during that conversation. I didnt go for it un the end, but shows that in some cases there may be little or no conditions to be met.So if I were you Id try a few dealers from the different makes that are doing this and see what they say.worth a phone call.

Here is a link to what opel are offering, top scrappage deal is against insignia, less against astra, less again against corsa etc....but this is only am example, check it out with individual dealers if they are anxious to do a deal to meet targets at quarter end you may indeed get a good bit for your car. Shop around, drive a hard bargain yourself

scrappage schemes are a bit of a red herring - just use it as a negotiation for a discount of list price. If hyundai are willing to offer 4k 'scrappage' then they may equally offer it as a discount. Its up to you how hard you bargain.

And even if you have 10K in cash, dont be afraid to put that back in the bank and finance more. Dealers will ultimately make more money from the finance deal than they will on the car sale itself.

Dont ever listen to crap like "we can only finance on the list price...". :)

Anyway, how bad is your passat? Will it take 10,000 euro to fix it?

If its just too ragged to bother with, why not replace it with a better shape 2006/7 model and keep your 10 grand in the bank?

Was that on a new peugot? I was told that some dealers will take anything as a "trade in/ scrappage" but have to think that like Elephants said, it is all negotiable.

Ultimately there is no interest in the bank so may as well not be paying a dealer 4.9% and getting .25% from the bank

Anyway, how bad is your passat? Very Bad. It is at the stage where the wife cannot trust it, we are always waiting for the next bit to fall off/break Will it take 10,000 euro to fix it?

Looking to buy a new Insignia. First dealer told me that my old top of the range Astra auto was worthless and that the 4500 scrappage meant just that. An absolute insult for someone buying a near 40K car.
Second dealer said " I want your car! " and will give you a normal discount ( over 4k) plus a reasonable trade in price.
Now I could make more money by selling the old one privately, this means double insurance on two cars and selling costs etc.
Opel are insulting, you get 4500 off a 24K car and the same off a 40K car.
The upside is 5 year warrenty, 3 years servicing, free road tax if you can find it on the opel ie site.
The first dealer was a nightmare, 5 visits and round in circles. The second one was a 10 minute negotiation and all plusses.
Always had top of the range vauxhalls new and run them untill they are worthless before crushing them.
I have a feeling I am going to curse getting rid of the Astra, 12 years and never let me down.

    40k for an Insignia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭Tippjohn

Yep, top of the range and delivery is the list price! about 35K plus sweetners is the end figure.
What annoys me is that when I used to buy in England you got the best price with no gimmicks any time of the year.
Now the whole scrappage deal is an insult.
At Xmas they gave the 4500 and did not want the old car, now they do.
So anyone who has a car worth more than e500 is better buying outside the deal.
The worst marketing ever. Not confined to Opel.
Buying here is now viable for me due to exchange rates going the right way.
I have never had a problem with a GM car.

Seems mad money for an Insignia being honest, especially since it's been around since late 2008 and a new model will be launched sometime next year. You would imagine Opel would be offering better discounts to encourage sales of existing models.

Look at the website for the costs. You have to realise that half the cost is tax!!!!!. The price is about the same in Brit and Here at the moment. A different matter on the continent. I am talking top of the range tourer ( glorified estate) Auto.
Strangely enough the dealers have just started coming back with revised offers! The sales must be poor. Also consider that most sales are for very basic cars. Small engined diesels that will be awful to drive. The spec for Opels are better than Mercs or BMWs that are another 20K plus to buy! as for some of the other cars, enough said. All emmisions that are not true. truth is I don't care if I buy or not, but I will depending on the bottom line.

An entry level BMW 5 Series diesel Touring starts at just under €49k. Leather, xenon headlights, sat nav, etc are all standard. Audi A6 has similar pricing. Just saying that the price gap between premium and non premium brands is shrinking.

Hence the reason for top of the range. Bit like a big house is a better bargain than a small one. Of course running costs have to be considered in both. As you say 49K for entry level BMW but not a 5 year warranty etc.

Sure might as well keep going and buy a Kia Optima so if I wanted a super duper long warranty.

    Yeah, but Kia........

He He Don,t forget some pay another 20K for a badge..... I had two Carltons, the dogs whatsits. Top gear called them caravan club cars. In reality fast, quiet, comfortable and reliable.

Claudia Schiffer will be along any moment now to reassure herself and us they are German.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭Tippjohn

I must admit that I would prefer not to buy German. My Carltons were "fabrique en belgique" and my Astra was made in Liverpool by Irish people. HRH was in germany yesterday, in a VW Bentley :-( . Still now that we are all partners, guffaw, choke, wheeze.

Why not wait and by the new Astra thats due out soon. It will be more modern than the Insignia and still be plenty big plus you would be one of the first to have the new model Astra. You could still get a top of the range one and for less than 40k which is a lot of money for an Opel. Doubt you will get half that back if you went to sell it in 3years time but you say you keep your cars for well over a decade so that should not worry you. Have you looked at any Kia,s they have a 7year warranty and the Cee,d and Optima are nice cars too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

In fact I had a stroke of luck! The day I finally negotiated a good price (end of month and desperate for orders) Opel announced no more 163 estate autos! However they are now upgrading to the 170 whisper diesel so I am getting the latest engine at vitual cost. The Insignia body will not change much, in fact I like it as it is. My 2003 Astra 8 valve was/is a lot better than the next one with the 16 valve engine so that was lucky as well.
The GF has a 4 year old Astra estate, again a great car, but the Insignia is nearly a foot longer :-).
I will have to make a hard judgement in 5 years, I don't fancy the gizmos without a warrenty.

Looking at the hyundai scrappage deal but just wondering if purchasing a car through one of these deals is there still a chance of getting a further reduction off the car list price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭Smiley11

I was looking at it too but its apparently ending on the 31st of January. I'll never get organised in that time! Did you hear if they're extending it further?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,673 ✭✭✭s_carnage

Don't think they are. Rang another garage today about getting a price and they said they've already stopped as they wouldn't have a car by the end of the month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭Smiley11

Oh well! Serves me right for dawdling. I'll have a look at the other scrappage offers. Thanks for that s :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It originally was supposed to end on 31st December and they extended it until the 31st January. Very unlikely they will extend it further but you never know if demand stays strong, might be worth asking a dealer. If it does finish at the end of this month then chances are they will probably introduce it again in May or June for the 162 reg in July.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭Smiley11

I'm going to go & test drive it anyway but I don't think our scrap car will last until June without major works plus I'm hauling a rapidly growing newborn in & out of the back of a 3 door so my back may give in before the banger! :) I'll probably have to go with an alternative make or take up the VW low PCP if thats still available when I organise my finances. Nissan website says their offer is extended but doesn't say when it ends.

They extended it from 30th November prior to that :) and Hyundai have extended it again to Feb 29th http://www.hyundai.ie/161offers/index.php Since Hyundai hit #1 for overall sales in January, with Tuscon being #1 model, I guess they'd like to stay there. Hopefully there are cars available to meet demand.

Have they really?! God I better get the scrap car in my name & get it done! I'd kind of resigned myself to the Qashqai as I think the Tucson is a bit plasticky internally but then the Qashqai is every second car you see on the road! First world problems! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,044 ✭✭✭Wossack

with the sales of the tuscon, I reckon it will leapfrog the cashcow for every 'second car on the road', if thats of concern..!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭Smiley11

True. I need to drive both. I think from sitting into them that the Tucson is more attractive externally but I think the Qashqai probably has better spec & is more comfortable. My OH hates crossovers but thinks the Tucson is the best of a bad lot. Realistically it'll come down to which has the scrappage offer whenever I get my ass in gear!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The Tucson and Qashqai have similar specs but as you go up the Qashqai model line up they can get quite expensive. Depends what you want but middle of the range Executive in the Tucson probably offers the best value imo, comes with leather and sat nav. Whereas a panoramic roof has been added to the middle of the range Qashqai SV model but no leather or sat nav on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭Smiley11

The Tucson is a fine looking bus in fairness & would certainly be a massive improvement on our banger! The scrappage seems to be a good option & from I've seen on the roads the last couple of weeks, a lot of people are snapping them up. My friend got the Peugeot 3008 on a similar deal & its working out at €70 a week for them which is very good I think. I just don't like Peugeots unfortunately.
