I've got 4000 to spend on a car. Was originally going to spend 8000 on an 08, diesel car but not in my budget right now.

I'm looking for something reliable, ecomomical, petrol, and with a wee bit of style/comfort.
Will be in Dublin at the weekend so if there's any deals going up there?
There's a lad in a garage here selling a car '06 Toyato Aventis with 100,000 miles, petrol for 4k?? good deal or any other suggestions?

I am assuming you dont need a diesel car, if you mention petrol...

4,000 will buy you anything from a tin can city car to a luxury saloon... the only way you can know if it is a good deal, is by comparing it with asking prices for similar mile, spec and age cars of same model.

Oh so i'll just look on the car websites and compare to other models etc... Any good websites for looking/comparing? Would be interested in a saloon car i think. thanks for that.

Car websites have advertised "asking" prices, these are not the prices that the cars actually sell for. A seller will always ask for a bit more than they are willing to accept as they know the buyer will also want to negotiate down the asking price. You also need to factor in dealer prices v private seller prices. Dealers will nearly always look for more than a private seller as they have higher overheads and will offer some sort of warranty with the car. A private seller will not.

Thanks for your replies. I've heard that BMW are expensive on repairs etc.
What about a Ford or Renault??

if reliable and cheap ish to maintain are important, Id go with a Nissan, toyota, honda....
I've heard that BMW are expensive on repairs etc.
they would be similar to the other luxury brands, they will most likely cost more for parts etc, I wouldnt go down this route, at that kind of money i.e. 4,000 ish...

Unless you are handy yourself. I dont see the point in buying those kind of cars on that budget if one or two jobs could render the car a write off for the purchaser...

Maybe go onto the bangernomic forum, that is true cheap motoring. No depreciation, no loan interest, the only type of "cheap motoring" not oh Ill spend thousands extra to save peanuts on motor tax...

I have always liked and had good experiences with fords...

    a volvo s40 or 60 might suit...

Thanks for those updates. There's so much out there when you look and it does get real confusing.. I know that people rave about Toyota and how reliable they are. But they look a bit on the boring side. Also, Ford would be a good option but are they not expensive on petrol?
I hadn't thought of a volvo, or nissan so might research those.
    Cheers..

Take your time, do car history and service history checks, an hour researching the car pre purchase is better than weeks of it getting repaired.
