The alternative to your car...

A post in the chat thread just got me thinking, if I didn't have the car(s) that I have now, I really wonder what I would have done with the money instead... I don't drink much or smoke... Reckon I would have travelled to different countries..

What do ye think? All the cash tied up in that depreciating asset, what would you have done with it if you hadn't got the car?

    I drive a BMW.

So I would have got a penis tattooed onto my forehead just so everyone knows.

I thought it might make for interestign discussion as to what you'd do if suddenly you didn't have the car yet you have the value of it in cash....

I'd love to go travelling, see Asia and Africa...

Well, why would onyone want to do it to themselves - get rid of the car?

Probably take the cash and buy a car.
Can't imagine not having a car, and I live in the sticks so it's kinda essential.

I'd probably just have more impulse purchases and probably as above, be well on my way to a mortgage as opposed to renting with wildly fluctuating savings account.

I dont smoke and would only have a drink on special occasions. I'd probably have a better phone, i'd love the s6 but the s4 mini is plodding along fine. I'd love more clothes, but what i have is doing fine :P. I get a decent holiday in every year but i'd probably travel more too.

That said, i've just finished my degree so having a huge amount of disposable cash is not something i've been used to over the last few years :pac: particularly as i was working full time before i went back to education.

The RCZ and GT86 are a result of choosing the alternative to a nice car a few years ago. Thats paying off rather nicely, but if I could get the value of them in cash now and I didn't need another car, the money would go towards a place in Paris

    Facepalm....

It's not exactly a hugely realistic question, more for fun...? So if for whatever reason you no longer needed the car etc, where do you think you'd have spent it or would spend it on...

My problem is buying the right car in the wrong condition. I've never really had big ticket cars (or bikes) but they've always robbed me in those small €100-€500 upgrades, improvements and elective repairs. Effectively I would have been better off having saved a lump to get the right car or a fixed payment for a straight clean car. I could probably have taken those trips I kept putting off.

I don't really understand the question. I very nearly bought an Audi A6 instead that time, though.

I'd have a fairly decent cinema room set up at home, with all the consoles also.

Hmmmm.... The combined value of my cars I could have found a nice place in Dublin to rent, survive for the month and cry in the corner when its all gone...

Or for the same package a 1 way ticket to Manila/America and never come back :)

Or for 1 car depending on what it is have a chape/mad weekend out :D

    Eat in restaurants more often.

Lunch at the fancy place instead of Spar, also...

No need to traqvel when you live in Ireland. We have it all! :pac:

I know a lot of people my age who have bought 2013 Corollas and the likes, I reckon I'm in a far better position. Bought my car 3+ years ago for 2700, have had great fun driving and maintaining it and if I wanted to sell it I wouldn't lose too much of that initial outlay. The cost of tax and fuel etc is a lot, but before I had the car I would just throw my money at other things. Buy pointless gadgets, upgrade my phone when I didn't need to.

If I decide the car is in the way of something I need or want, I'll get rid. But for now, I'm more than happy to plough on!

ok spent €13K on the car 10 years ago on the car.

so that would be one good ski trip per year.

    Or

    luxury hotel holiday per year

    or

    just keep buying camera gear.

now with the maintenance money (Tax, insurance and servicing)

    514 + 400 + 200(ish)

I'm just going to spend all this on camping gear

    Spend petrol money on beer:D

Hopefully the prices of e36's go up in the next few years, the amount going on track would suggest it's a good bet.
I'd like to see myself get my money back in 5 years.
6cyl petrol coupe for the win!

E30's are doing it right now.
E36's will be as rare as they are being destroyed all the time at drift events.
I got my car very cheap.

If it goes up a couple of grand in 5 or more years I'll be chuffed. Probably won't ever sell it i reckon anyway.

But they will gain in price, they already have in 6 months for some reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

I have zero need for a car, would be on a bike otherwise.

I'd spend the money on other pointless crap I don't need, like a hair transplant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭power pants

Yes maybe actually, that model seems to be the one that is least desirable at the moment out of the coupes so in time might be less on the road due to being scrapped/trashed now. Then prices could go up

Least desirable? You blatantly know very little of the want for them cars.
Anyway just so you know, as you should anytime you try this with me, your under the table trolling of me won't get to me buddy ;)

i don't think the question was has your car made you make any sacrifices.

the question was, as a car enthusiast, if you didn't spend your discretionary income on your car, where else might it go/ what else might it do for you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,358 ✭✭✭Into The Blue

Don't think I've ever spent my own money on a car, so if no car, I'd be 1% less in debt :D

Im not sure I follow though

I have 10k to spend on a car. If I dont spend it on the car I will spend it on something else?

I would either buy the car and also carry on spending on whatever I needed within reason

Or not spend the car and carry on with life and also carry on spending on whatever I needed within reason

    it's quite simple.

last night in the chat thread, i posted that i had just dropped €1400 on my celica and that it was, in my opinion a more enjoyable way to spend it, than spending it on alcohol/ nights out etc.

now, there are some wealthy people on here, but no Dan Bilzerian types from what i'm aware, so we all have some sort of limit on our income and a limited amount of discretionary income.

the question then being, for example, if i didn't spend €1400 on the celica yesterday, what would i do with it? am i saving for a mortgage? am i into traveling? do i collect stamps etc.

probably just keep it in the bank until I needed it at a future date then

People spend a lot more on cars who aren't in to them at all and can't necessarily afford them!

Why is that? It sounds to me like you are talking complete and utter bollox as usual. Take a look at any pre-e36 or e34 Bmw at the moment and tell me why the e36 isn't going to do the exact same thing in a few years time.

If your e36 is a) 6 cylinder b) a coupe, c) an //M or Sport car it will go up in value.

A friend of my Dad's (in his 80s now) bought a 1968 or 9 E3 Bmw in about 79 when it was an old, expensive to run and tax and the rest barge that nobody could afford. Think e38 in todays terms. Anyway, he paid 20 quid for it at an abandoned vehicle auction (when these were an actual thing), registered it, drove it and sold it after 3 years for the same amount.

How much do you reckon an early E3 bmw is worth today? Find me one that isn't 5 figures

Dunno about that, but there was one sold in Derry a couple of months back for about £3,500.

I guess, the other side of that would be, the cost to maintain any car in tip top condition is never going to be cheap. It'll always be an expensive prospect. Body work for rust and other bits would be killer.

It's not much, but I could not imagine myself without a car. Driving something bland and boring just kills me.
If I would not have a curse of petrol head, then I think money would go on tattoos, computer hardware.
Selling my car would add up nicely for a mortgage deposit on a small cheap house, but I don't plan on ever owning a house anymore. So meh.

Edit: I would invest a big part of money in to lego. I already do that, but I could do a lot more with extra cash for that.

Before buying a car I was into "Fpv"

Basically flying model aircraft from a first person view via wireless camera onboard the model aircraft.

It wasn't hugely expensive but a few 100 for sure. Very nerdy I know.

Here is one video of mine from onboard the rc aircraft.

I spent/borrowed the guts of 20 grand on my last car. A chape tax daysul 4cylinder Beamer which left me fairly cold. Sold that and just happened to fall into a 1000 quid focus. Bought it and made a small dent in my savings. I actually enjoy driving the focus 10 times more and it gives me the warm feeling inside not felt in a long time.

I've my house almost bought and thankfully I'll have a small mortgage so I'm going to save up for something nice again but I'll be buying it for cash not getting a loan. I don't know can you enjoy a car as much when you borrow than paying for it outright.
