Im looking at getting one of these.

Anyone here have one of these? Thoughts?

The only thing hold me back is not being able to find a way to network unlock it, anyone know where I could look to get it unlocked, I had no success on Ebay

I have one. Very nice phone, pretty zippy with a great screen. Nice and thin too with great build quality. Feels very sturdy in the hand. Pretty much stock Android 5.0.2 as well. Pretty amazing actually for €99. Miles ahead of anything in its price range.

Sorry for hijacking this but I figured this was as good a place as any to post another Vodafone own-brand phone: the Smart Ultra 6.

Engadget and Trusted Reviews have rated it and it seems like a really good deal: 5.5" 1080p HD screen, 2gb Ram, 16gb rom with MicroSD, 5mp/13 mp cameras and 3000 mAh battery. In the UK its £125. That's almost Oneplus value. If its mark-up in € isn't gouging and unlocking codes can be sorted online (its a rebranded ZTE s6 plus) it should sell very well and be a solid buy.

Will it stand up to the Chinese offerings available in the other thread seeing as you would get a warranty should anything happen to the phone by buying it here? Is it worth a punt?

Saw the 5.5 model browsing earlier, nice spec if its reasonably priced here. If it can be unlocked online somewhere that would be great.... Wouldn't touch the Vodafone network.

You wouldn't touch the best network in Ireland ?

No because they don't seem very competitive as far as data is concerned. Data is everything... Who makes cellular phone calls these days when you got viber etc to call people for free.
I think they are offering 5gb data per month where as you get unlimited from other providers.
    Best me ar$e.

If were talking about the quality of the network they are, never mentioned value. With Three on a personal line and Vodafone through work, 3g on vodatone = 4g on Three. Were going way off topic though.

Generally, networks in Ireland will offer "unlimited*" internet. You'll get a gig or two at full speed then they'll throttle you.

I saw that not long after posting this thread. It would be too close price wise to the 16GB One Plus though, so I wouldn't get it. Ive the 64GB and its a brilliant phone, much better than anything else near that price. The 16GB is out of stock now though.

Edit: Im looking for a 2nd phone.

If the Ultra is €150 or less it will be unbeatable for the money!
Vodafone are improving greatly with their own-brand devices.

I reckon it will be €179 to be honest. I'm ditching my moto g for this when its released. Unlock code on eBay is £3.75. Just hope vodafone plan to support it with an ota update or two and not just leave it stuck on 5.02 forever.

The Smart Prime 6 surprised me with pricing though, it was only €99 here despite being £79 in the UK, which was nearly €120 at the time. It has only been out here a few weeks and has already dropped so here's hoping for a similar story with the Ultra! The Ultra is made by ZTE too which is great.

Its supposedly on the July catalogue. Going to check it out on my lunch break in my local.

*Just checked in Vodafone nutgrove, they have the cases for them but not the phone yet. The guy said they will randomly get them in without notice. Check back next week so fingers crossed they are decently priced.

Looks like an amazing phone for the money providing you can get over the unbranded snob factor which should be easy enough. Great review here - http://www.trustedreviews.com/vodafone-smart-ultra-6-review#tr-review-summary

Now all we need is a link to a cheap and reliable unlock code. This looks promising - http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Vodafone-Smart-Ultra-6-Unlock-Codes-16-Digit-100-correct-instant-codes-/291500548350?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43dec960fe

Who's going to be the first to buy and unlock so the rest of us can follow?

Think i'll bite the bullet and buy one today. OnePlus was stolen last weekend so stuck for a phone.

Its a toss up of this or the Lenovo K3 Note, which seem pretty like for like.

I do have a €25 One4All I can use in VF which sweetens the deal.

Just worried about getting it unlocked!

Go for it! You can't really go wrong for €169. Its cheaper then what I was expecting it to be. I wonder will the stores have them in stock yet or is it online only for now. I'll pick mine up over the weekend providing stock in my local.

You can definitely get it unlocked so don't worry about that.

Just saw a demo model there in store. The screen is the business! Coming from my moto g the screen is a different world to be honest. Its quite light in the hand also. Not laggy at all going through all the menus. Its as good as your gonna get for that price.

I bought the phone yesterday and have to say im delighted with it.

Coming from a OnePlus and Previous to that a Nexus 4, its definitely somewhere in the middle.

Very snappy even with the bloatware preinstalled. Doesnt bother me that much, but I will root and eventually install another ROM as they become available.

The only thing that isnt too appealing is the back housing, seems very cheap and plasticy and branded with a big Vodafone logo but i'll be buying a case to cover that anyway.

Screen is fantastic quality, very bright, vibrant colours. Not too dissimilar to the OnePlus.

Cameras are good quality, both font and rear.

Battery is great so far, haven't used it a whole lot tbh. But its barely gone down in 24hrs.

Another bad point is the SIM and SD card slots are flimsy and a little awkward, but once in their I suppose I wont need to swap them out too much anyway.

Overall, a very solid phone and unbelievable value for money.

Just waiting on an unlock code now!

You buy one off ebay? Please let me know how you get one.

Did you have to register to Vodafone before using the phone? Or did you have a Vodafone account before hand? Also can you tell me if you had to give your details when buying the phone?

    Sorry for all the questions

Have you tested it with Viber or WhatsApp?
Do you reckon its a phone you'll hang onto for awhile?

Bought the code off ebay, yeah. I seen a few people recommend a guy on HUKD. Still havent gotten it, but he can take up to 24hrs to get back to you. So hopefully i'll find out tomorrow!

As for buying the phone, they didnt ask me anything. I guess they just presummed I was already on Vodafone. So didnt have to give them any information what so ever.

Ok thanks. Did you get a new number with it?

My One plus One has gone MIA so I need a new phone this seems to be the top contender. Quick question though for 4G, does it support Three's bands?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭StereoSound

I'm gonna buy this phone on Monday on my lunch break. I'll get it unlocked for my meteor sim. Can't wait...big screen fun on the cheap!

It will be my first vodafone branded handset so I hope they update it to 5.1. Just out of interest if anyone has any knowledge of this but is it ZTE who will be providing updates for this or is it a Vodafone in-house team who will do the updates for it?

    It was the Smart Prime.

It would make more sense to start a 2nd thread about the Smart Ultra and split this one. IMO. Its a very different price point.

How does rooting and unlocking effect any updates from Vodafone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,740 ✭✭✭54and56

OK, so back on the original topic - the Smart Prime 6.

I picked one up today for my daughter. Very smart device. Well built (I'm used to plasticky Samsung devices), good screen and snappy performance. Once you install a different launcher (I just installed Google Now Launcher) the VF looks and feel fades away.

Does anyone know how to root this phone and if there is a custom ROM for it so it can run as vanilla and light a version of Android as possible?

Yes, you'll have to message him now and quote the transaction/order # to him.

The best way to do it is to send him a message as part of the check out process.

The instructions from the guy I used http://www.ebay.ie/itm/291500548350 was to "Please add a message to seller on your checkout. You can find the box to add the message under the delivery address." and the info he requested in the message is "1. IMEI number 2. Phone Model 3. Current Network"

I got my sons phone delivered this morning, bought the unlock code, got the unlock code within about 15 minutes and had the phone unlocked 5 minutes later. All seems to be fine.

I'm all done now, ultra 6 running perfectly on meteor. I had the unlock code about 40 mins after I paid for it. Phone is running great, no complaints at all so far. I find its hard to believe I only paid €169 for this thing. Its unreal value!

I came from a 5" moto g to this, no doubt a big differance in size. You will get use to it. I'll probably never use my laptop ever again now that I have this thing.

If you're a heavy user there's no doubt the Ultra will suit you better. I'm a OnePlus One owner but actually purchased both the Prime 6 and the Ultra 6 for my daughter and son in the last week. The Prime is a fine device for day to day medium use but the Ultra is more of a workhorse for heavy use with bigger screen, bigger battery, more RAM etc etc.

Anyone bit the bullet on this and bought one and unlocked it successfully? Unlocks website offers the service but have yet to hear of active doing it.

Please, please, please limit discussion on this to the Prime 6 and not the Ultra.
