Moto X 2014 and Nexus 6 price reductions

Moto X 2014 and Nexus 6 have significant price reductions on motorola.co.uk at the moment.

Base model Moto X is reduced from £395 to £229 and Nexus 6 is down to £399.
Sale price is supposed to continue until June 30th

You'd have to go with Parcel Motel for delivery, but if there's someone in the market for a new smartphone, it could be a good deal at just a little over €320 for a Moto X delivered.

Had my order cancelled from Motorola website as you need a UK credit card, not impressed, was looking forward to my new custom x+1

That's a great price for the Moto X. I'm wondering if there is an ireland site for Motorola to get a similar offer?

Yeah, I also discovered this problem too late.
I'm really sorry. I thought it would be possible for us to get it from UK website with PM address. :(

Orange sell them (unlocked) for delivery throughout Europe. Prior to the price cut they were cheaper than direct from Motorola.
They are currently selling them at €340.

Did anyone get the moto direct from motorola? Wondering if its worth a try anyway. Pity you cant customise the one from orange.

I'm trying with an order through Motorola on the UK website - duridian & xECompanyx, how long did it take for you to get an email cancellation because of it needing a UK credit card?

I ordered on 17th Jun, received a mail from them on 18th saying order is on hold. Had to ring a UK number only to be told my order will be cancelled as they do not do freight forwarding. You must be a UK resident with a UK credit card.

Funny thing is, Motorola are registered for business in the republic of Ireland to avail of the low corporate tax rate yet they will not deliver their goods to us. What do ye Irish folk make of that?, I'm a bit cheesed off about it myself.

That's gas. Worth an email direct to them.

Its not good that companies are starting to enforce higher prices in Ireland than UK, especially when were willing to cover the extra cost of bringing the product in. Were used to paying higher for subscription based products like mobile contacts and TV packages but this is pushing it. Unless there is some sort of subsidy going on, it shows a lack of respect for the Irish market

I know I'm off by a few euro but the one you liked to is £299 which is roughly €415, the orange store is selling them for €339.
Can you try your sums again.

Different phones - Moto X and Nexus 6. Saying that I would never buy a Nexus from that site.

I picked up a Moto X 2014 (standard black model) today on Amazon France for €316.73 +€7.87 delivery.

The Amazon fr page says €309, but that is assuming French 20% VAT rate. When you buy it from Ireland they apply the extra 3% VAT for the Irish rate, which bumps it up to €316.73. It's fulfilled by Amazon themselves so there should hopefully be no problems.

I bought it about lunchtime and they took the money from my card sometime mid-afternoon.

I think it is very good for that price, even without the ability to customise it a bit.

I have been very happy with my standard black, first generation X that I bought second-hand off Adverts.ie last year. Previous owner had purchased it from Amazon Germany. It's even got Lollipop on it now after last week's update.
Only reason I've got the notion of buying the newer model is because of the price drop and, to be honest, a touch of gadget insanity. The first gen still runs everything really well.

Got the email saying its 'on-hold' and to ring them. Not holding out much hope. Will look at the Amazon France option.

duridian, do you set the phone up into whichever language you prefer or did it come pre-Frenched?

Usually Android is ok, you choose the language when setting up if I remember correctly

I think with Moto X, it defaults to English, because my current phone is from Germany, but the exact software/firmware it runs has English as part of the name:

    222.21.15.ghost_row.Retail.en.DE

The last two parts en.DE indicate English as default language and DE for Deutschland where it was purchased.

Most phones I've seen seem to also go by the SIMcard if the firmware isn't specifically English by default, so I reckon you'll have no problem if you get the phone from France.

P.S. The only thing different really in getting the Moto X from France is that it probably will come with a charger that doesn't fit our electrical sockets. But any regular microUSB charger will work fine. I have used my first gen X with lots of different chargers, Asus, Nokia, HTC, Alcatel etc. without any problem. That's one of the things I love about Androids! (and I suppose in fairness same can be said about Windows phones like the Lumias.)

Great, thanks for that info gents.

Complete side note regarding chargers, I find the 5Volt 2amp charger for Samsung devices charges fastest - Moto G, Galaxy Tab3 and Linx 8 all using the Samsung charger with no problems. I have used a Blackberry charger which is 5V 750mA (0.75amps) and find it very slow to charge, but will still charge. The Rikomagic 802iiis (TV stick) crashes using the blackberry charger and needs good ampage.

The TV stick you mention is 100% dependent on the current flowing into it to power it in real time, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear of it crashing with a 750mA.
You've a nice collection of devices there!

I'm only a few days behind you on this procurement route.

Looks like a saving of €12 via the amazon.es site, ah well.

Seems to have gone up to €321.52 since morning.
It was definitely €299 earlier today when I looked, which also lines up with what adox said about total cost (€312 delivered to Ireland).

Spanish VAT rate is 21% so :

€321.52 divided by 121, then multiplied by 123 to get Irish price = €326.31
plus about €8 to deliver. ~€334
It's still not too bad a price, but €312 was a fantastic price for anyone looking for a white model that was lucky enough to get one at that time.

[edit] Spanish camelcamelcamel confirms it was €299 also.

Anyone tried to use debit card on motorola.co.uk site ?

There was an issue before when people were using credit cards on uk sites and transactions were being declined as there is an address cross check on credit cards , but same sites were taking debit cards with no issues.

Is there anywhere that sell the 32GB one that works for Ireland?

Amazon France are probably your best bet as they have the option of 32GB on the black model.

The price jumps by €88 (€397.10) to when you select the 32GB option and with Irish VAT being 3% higher that means €407.03 to us Irish.

It's still way cheaper than UK Amazon's price of £369.43 Sterling which is about €520 at current exchange rates.

I never put a case on, I think they ruin the look and feel of the phone. My nexus 4 lasted nearly 3 years and many drops without a gammy case on it.

Might put a screen protector on this one.

To give ye an update, I received my Moto X 2014 around midday.
Came by Fastway courier, which kind of surprised me as UPS bought i-parcel last year.

It's all as I expected; model no. XT1092, has the French/EU charger and is running KitKat 4.4.4 out of the box.

So I am currently looking into grabbing the 5.1 OTA update off XDA to get it up to Lollipop before I begin installing apps etc.
