Out of hours work

    Just looking for some advice a couple of times per month my employer expects work to be carried out for clients very late at night or early in the morning typically anytime from 23:00 - 05:00 and any day of the week.

    The nature of the work means it can be done from home and usually takes no more than an hour. Up to now this has always been done by myself and several others without any real question but it's gone from being a favor to being expected as part of normal work duties. Our contracts are 9 to 5.30 Mon - Fri and attempts to formalize the out of hours work have always been put on the long finger and forgotten about by our immediate superior.

    What would be the best approach to getting this formalized and whats fair reward for this out of hours work?

    Formal letter from the team (everyone signs) to the supervisor, cc'ing HR.

    It's likely that this will trigger various questions, including whether you have a safe and secure working environment at home: worse case HR may insist that you travel to the office to do the work. But it should get you at least time-off-in-lieu, if not more cash.

    Make sure that you know what you want to achieve by forcing the issue on to the table.
