Barrister protocol

    Hi,

    Quick question.

In a civil matter what is the protocol when a plaintiff meets his/her Barrister? Is the correct way to address the Barrister Mr/Mrs Murphy or is it ok to address the Barrister as Sean/Mary as the case may be? I respect formal protocols but I'm a very informal person and more comfortable calling people by their first name than their surname as I feel it creates a type of hierarchy/barrier to communication and after all I'm the client writing the cheque. Perhaps the protocol is that the Barrister refers to me as Mr XXX although I would quickly request that he called me Jean.

Appreciate any clarification I can get. I'm meeting my Barrister for the first time at lunchtime today

The barrister will call you Mr X until you ask him not to. Your barrister and your solicitor will call one another by first names, and in negotiation with the other side's solicitor and barrister first names will always be used on both sides. But in court it will always be Mr This and Ms That.

You can your barrister by their first name.
