How old is too old?

I'm off to live in the south of Spain in three months. I have never played golf. Have occasionally played Pitch n Putt.

I am 52 years young and wondering is it too late to take up golf?

Where I am going to live is right beside a golf course and would be a great way of spending some of my time as I am heading off alone.

Would really appreciate any helpful opinions, especially from anyone who has taken up the game late.

    Thanks.

I'm afraid it is too late. However, I have a possible solution.

I work in IT and it's never too old to take that up.

So, how about I go and live in Spain, playing lots of golf, and you take my job in IT? I'll also throw in a wife and a few kids, mortgage, etc - just to keep you going. :-)

Seriously, never too late to start. You couldn't be any worse at it than some of us who have been playing for decades!

I've played golf with 70-80 year old men who can still find their way around a course with ease, so a 50-something year old could still have a good 30 years or so of golf left in them.

    Go for it

Absolutely its never to late, many people start when they retire from work. Also a great way to meet new people while in Spain.
    I envy you soooo much.

Your story is interesting. Any more info - just out of nosiness.

It is a great idea - and know many men who started golf in 50s - the only regrets most of them have is, that they did not start earlier.

If you are on your own - it will be a great way to get to know people.

I'd almost go as far as to say - get a feel for things and join if you like it.

The great thing about spain versus Ireland - is the year long golf. There are great driving ranges too - typically the pro runs these and you can get food and beer at them. In fact, the driving ranges I went to over there were far better than here. By just going to them - the pro will get to know you and maybe the best tip ever in golf - is to get 5 lessons to start.

The great thing about golf at the start - are there are so many goals to target.

    A first par
    A first Birdie
    Break 120
    Break 100
    Break 90

In fact golf can be far more rewarding when you have achievable goals.

Anyway - the great thing about golf is - you are forced to meet people in a way.

I'd imagine it is far too easy too go the pub for that reason in a new country.

Anyway - best of luck. Golf is not for all, but if it gets you , it is the best sport("game") of them all.

By the way - the fact you have played pitch and putt - gives you a far better head start than you think.

Played golf today with a guy in his early 60's. Retired two years and had never played before. Plays off 26 and plays twice a weekand says he loves it.

My own Dad started in his late 40's, 82 this year and still plays once a week !

You're already ahead of most 52 year old golfers - you've no bad habits! Absolutely go for it and invest in a bit of good coaching from the off.
