VW golf engine check light on

    Hi all,

Driving a 01 VW Golf (160,000 miles up). The engine check light has been on (solid not flashing) for the last few weeks. Haven't the money to get it looked at yet. Car is driving fine, same as before the light came on.

Seems it could be anything from a bad catalytic converter to a bad petrol cap to a host of other things.

Anyone had this problem ? Would a garage charge much to retrieve the error code ? Any advice or experiences appreciated. I haven't a clue about cars.

    Thanks.

    I had it on a 99 golf.

    It was a faulty bulb

Have you checked all your bulbs?

The one one the Speedo? (Right of 20mph)

That's an emissions light, Lambda error or sticky EGR. Probably not too serious but I'd still get it checked!

A scan is the only way to know if the car isnt showing any obvious signs, what engine? if its a 1.4 youre doing well with 160k miles!

    Thanks all,

Haven't checked the bulbs. I'll do that in a bit. Yes its a 1.4 but the engine was replaced last year with a refurbished one. Its a bit heavy on petrol but driving fine otherwise.

I'll drop it to a garage tomorrow and see what happens.

The same thing happened to me. A friend who is a mechanic had a diagnostic tool that I borrowed.......turned out to be a problem with the Exhaust Gas Re circulation. I am still yet tho get it fixed

Heavy on petrol and check engine light suggests it could be a bad O2 sensor.
