No Claims Bonus in limbo

My insurance is up for renewal but the No Claims Bonus cert they sent me said there's only 2 years No Claims Bonus. Thing is, nobody has claimed off my insurance but I did claim off someone else (they drove into the back of me). That was 8 months ago and I got the pay out to replace my car (it was written off) but there's a personal injury claim still pending. I rang the insurance last week when I got the renewal notice cos I thought it was high (but hadn't received the NCB at that point) and they told me I had 6 years No Claims Bonus, which I then went and used to get quotes. Now they send me a cert for only 2 Years. Is it normal to penalise the person MAKING the claim? Does this only stand until the case is fully settled and liability proven? Sickened at having to pay out hundreds more in premium because of an event that wasn't my fault.

Tbh, you need to ring the company and check if their info is correct.

Just rang them there, they've said that they're gonna get the open claim closed and issue me a new No Claims Bonus for the full 6 years and a new quote. Fingers crossed that all goes ok. If I'd not questioned it though would they ever have done it? Gotta wonder if they were just hoping I'd pay the high amount based on the lower NCB or am I just being too cynical?

How long have you been with your current Insurer ?

...and I'm curious how they can close an Open Claim which has nothing to do with them.

If the claim was (correctly) notified to the OP's insurers for 'record purposes' it could easily be still open. When you verify that the 3rd party's insurers have admitted liability by settling the OP's material damage claim, his own insurer should close down their file, even though an injury claim is ongoing

OP, are you sure you're not just with your current Insurer for the past 2 years ?
Hence the 2 year no- claims (as they will only give you a cert showing that you are claims free since you moved to them).
Seems strange that you received a 2 year cert but made a no- fault claim 8 months ago.
