I've tried searching but couldn't find what I was looking for.

Leap card from Brides Glen (tag-on) to Stephens Green (tag-off). Can I get out at Dundrum, go shopping, and re-board without tagging?

No, must tag off when you leave the stop

If you tag on again within 90 minutes of the start of journey the second (and third) trip will be at a discounted rate

While you are correct in stating that no break of journey is permitted, the LEAP90 discount does not apply to two LUAS journeys taken after one another, or indeed two Irish Rail trips.

    It only applies to:
•Luas – Dublin Bus and Dublin Bus - Luas
    •Luas – DART/Commuter Rail and DART/Commuter Rail – Luas
•DART/Commuter Rail – Dublin Bus and Dublin Bus – DART/Commuter Rail
    •Dublin Bus – Dublin Bus

So OP, you could save money by taking the LUAS from Brides Glen to Dundrum and then the bus from Dundrum to the city (the bus fare would be discounted by €1).

Is there no leap discount if you are switching lines? don't you have to tag off at SSG and tag back on at the redline?

No - because LUAS is based on zonal fares, such a trip is treated as a single journey and priced accordingly (even though there is a walk between the two). In those circumstances, yes you do tag on/tag off at SSG/Red Line.

The normal LEAP discount of €1 doesn't apply as there are single fares set for journeys travelling from 1 to 8 zones, in the same way as Irish Rail have single fares set for every DART/Suburban station pairing.

Doesn't the fare allow you to travel for 90 minutes? So from Brides Glen to the Green you could hop off at Dundrum for ~40 minutes right?

But then it doesn't count as a single journey. The 90 minutes discount applies to a single journey, not the fact that you travelled twice in 90 minutes.

It's only valid for one single trip, with no break of journey.

    http://www.luas.ie/single-and-return-tickets.html
Single and Return Tickets don’t require any Photo Identity Card. There is no student fare applicable for Single and Return tickets. Single tickets are valid 90 mins from time of issue, for one trip only. No breaks in journey are permitted. Return tickets are valid for outward and return travel on day of issue only. The first trip has to be completed within 90 mins from time of issue. Children up to and including 3 years old can travel free on Luas but must be accompanied by a paying passenger.

The only scenario where you can break is where you switch from the Green Line to the Red Line.

What happens if your journey is longer than 90 mins, because of an incident where the rpa are responsible for the incident ( mechanical, crash, power failure etc)

Assuming you are talking about the LEAP card, then you should apply to LEAP for a refund if you are overcharged - the system can't possibly know why you were delayed.

I think an element of common sense is needed here. That sort of circumstance is highly unusual.

    As it was mentioned upthread....

If you transfer between from Green to Red and don't tag-off at SSG and back on at Abbey (eg simply tagging on at Sandyford and off at Connolly), how will you be charged?

I meant would the ticket checkers try fine you if the time exceeded the 90 mins.

Well wouldn't you think that they would be aware of a system outage?

They are not automatons - they would apply common sense. Why would they fine you when you were delayed by a system outage? That would make no sense whatsoever.

Again, I'd have to say that you're picking on something that happens very very infrequently.

    Seriously!

The 90 minutes does not apply to the duration of the trip, you don't have to get off the bus or Luas when the 90 minutes is up!

This is how it works: When you validate a Leap card on a bus or the reader at a Dart or Luas stop/station, you get a €1 discount if the same card was used at any operator within the previous 90 minutes.

Excluding a breakdown, crash, nuclear fallout or power cuts (in your fertile imagination, I added the nuclear stuff), that means that on any journey in Dublin you will get a €1 discount on the second and subsequent legs if you use a Leap card more than once one in the same journey.

Unless the second journey is also on LUAS following a LUAS journey, or on Irish Rail following an Irish Rail journey. No €1 discount applies here (they have fare structures for journeys from each station/stop pairing).

I'd imagine you could get overcharged. I've not tried it!
