Unable to get speed back

    Hi-

About a year ago my fitness was at it's peak.
I had my 5k time down to 21:00.
I was running about 5 times a week, distances were never more than 10k.

Due to a number of non-running related injuries and some poor health I was unable to run for about 6 months.
I've been back running for about 4 months now, I run about 3 times a week, usually going for runs of between 4-10k in length.

The thing is that I've been doing a few 5k races and have been unable to get
    my time below 30:00.
I appreciate that I might not be at the point I was a year ago but would have expected to have easily gotten my 5k time down to at least 25:00 by now.

This is really frustrating and I'm starting to worry that there may have some medical issue that is part of the problem.

    Opinions?

That is a very big difference. Have you done a check up with your doctor? Get your bloods and heart checked out. Have you piled on a lot of weight in the meantime? You have gone from 7 min/m pace to 10 min/m pace in 6 months which is a big change. Not much else to say until you get checked out.

    I'm no more than a half-stone heavier.
Bloods and heart are fine, to the best of my knowledge.

No need to get into any details but might your poor health have something to do with this? If not and you're putting in the same effort as before when you got 21:00 then I would go see your GP.

    Hi-

I had a fractured arm and some other minor ailments that I think have long cleared up.
It wouldn't be fair to say that I'm putting in the same effort as before.
But I would have expected to be able to achieve sub-25min 5ks in race conditions.

That is certainly unusual. Mind me asking what pace the 3 training runs a week are at?

    I've been training on HR.
Usually around 150 (11 min/mile), with some tempo runs around 170.

    Hi Supernintento,

If it were me I would go and see my GP. The drop off in performance isn't what I would expect after 6 months out and an extra half a stone in weight especially after being back training for 4 months. For peace of mind if nothing else go and get yourself checked out. If your GP doesn't take you seriously go see another one that has an interest in sport.

I think seeing a GP is good but you need to compare what you were doing in the past to now, are you doing the same training, are you really putting the same error into the runs? , Maybe skip the races for a couple of months and increase your training runs, a 4th day week over a number of weeks should get some good improvements. To be honest going form 30 minutes to 25 minutes is very possible over a short time of consistent training.
