Filled up at Pre pay fuel pump yesterday. Put in debit card. Typed in pin. Didn't ask me for how much I was wanting to purchase. Just said start filling. I put 50 euro in it and placed hose back on the machine. Machine just said thanks for visiting. Looked at my bank account this morning and it said 1 euro was taken from my account and not 50 euro. Very strange. Anyone experience this?

Pre-authorisation of the card to be sure its valid is all that is.

Can take a day or so to come out. Depends how quickly it was processed.

Your lucky it was only 1 euro. I'm just back from France and have noticed that the petrol station I used over there " E Leclerc " pre-autourised 100 euro each time and are slow enough to Un authorise it. I now have 300 euro that I'm waiting for them to un authorise :(

Over here it usually takes a few days to pop up, the machine doesn't always dial up to bank when being used, and will cache a number of payments for batch processing at the end of a predetermined cycle. It does however dial up everytime for pre-authouristion.

The pre pay garage on the Swords road used to do this.
You tell the machine the max you want to spend, it pre-authorises that amount and refunds whatever the balance is over the next few days.

Haven't used it in a good while so not sure if it's the same system or not.
They used to be the cheapest around so was worth doing at the time.

I used unattended pumps in Ireland all the time and the exact amount came straight out, like when I checked my online banking it was charged within seconds to my Dutch Account

I've mostly had to authorise €99 before filling never €1, and the correct amount has so far always been deducted from my card (credit card) the preauthorisation amount can take a while to come off your card though - similar thing is done in some hotels, your card gets preauthorised just to make sure you can pay. €1 seems a very low amount to preauthorise it usually is enough to cover whatever you purchase ( I assume the pumps I was at would only deliver a max of €99 but I never put it to the test as my tank wouldn't take it anyway ) I was very skeptical about using it but I don't have any concerns now - sods law it will go wrong on me the next time...

Wasn't E LeClerc the brother of Monsieur LeClerc in Allo Allo? Never knew he had a petrol station.

Prepay stations cause very odd stuff to appear on debit cards, particularly those that present as credit cards like most here do. You're lucky its only appearing as €1; a preauth of a lot more can appear.

    .

Well he was master of disguise so you probably never noticed. The man could wear a false mustache over his real identical mustache.

I'm from France and it works differently with French debit/credit cards : They do take that pre authorisation but immidiately after you fill up the car the pre-auth is gone and they charge you for the actual amount, full stop. This system is very common in France and I've never heard anyone complaining about it or seen an amount "blocked" on my French accounts the way the Irish banks do.
After 10 years in the republic I still use my French debit card for reasons like this one (or the fact they don't charge per transaction)

I generally keep a small float in my current account and transfer in cash as required. I find Topaz will not fill if the card has less than about €150 in the balance. I'm not sure if this is a Topaz requirement or my bank.

Maybe for French accounts, but my Irish one ( TSB and also the same with BOI ) has still got the money blocked and from the experience my partner had, it will remain so until 7-8 days following the transaction, its also worth noting that the amount for the fuel I got also was deducted a day after I got it.

Nothing wrong with the system and in fairness the fuel stations there seemed very efficient, just a warning for anyone who might not have a heap of money left on the account when on holidays and wouldn't be expecting it.

Same thing happened me yesterday! I stopped the pump after €30 because I knew I hadn't that much in my account. Checked my online banking and only €1 was debited. I couldn't find a contact number either to try sort it out. I've used the same pumps before and never had anything like this happen.
