Hi, just wondering what you think the best estate/jeep type car for about 10k would be

I do about 30k a year and will be carrying bikes.

would be nice to have an a4 avant 2008 or similar but they seem to be north of 10k for an 08.
My current car is a 2.0turbo forester so i guess most things are an improvement mpg wise :)

looked at so far (on donedeal that is) A4 avants/V50 volvo estate/bmw touring (doddgy engines though i hear?)

    Bikes ??

You'll struggle to get a bike into a V50, let alone two. Unless you take off the front and back wheels.

You'll need something a lot more spacious, we used to get two into an 01 Renault Scenic with loads of space for baggage. Height makes a big difference.

Personally I'd go for something like this and pocket the extra €8,000

or this, prices on these are going up.

If you want a big newer car then a Passat or Superb estate would be an option, as would some MPV (they tend to be bigger than a 4X4)

The V70 could work. I drove one the other day (I'm in a similar car hunt as you but at a third of your mileage). The steering is fairly light but it is a good sized estate.

Would you be open to bikes on a boot mounted rack? I'm not sure how often you carry bikes but that option can open up more models to you.

Superb/Mondeo estates are quite cavernous too.

A word of warning about the petrol models mentioned here: I just adjusted the calcs I made in for my situation to take for your mileage and I think it would be a very unwise choice indeed, as long as a reliable work horse diesel is in the mix. V50 would probably be too small, I agree.

That must have been a dealer demo car, never saw one on irish plates before, and the only other 2.8 I've seen was a 06 saloon.

Do you want to carry bikes inside the car ? I've a seat altea and can comfortably carry two mountain bikes, with the seat posts and front wheels removed, carrying them upside down, One is a 29er also, so plenty of room, I have them held in place with ratchet straps. Its been a bit more difficult since I bought a dropper post though.

Sorry should've clarified, I'll get a good thule toe bar rack for the bikes or a roof one. bikes don't need to go inside. just all the gear that goes along with it.

that saab is an animal! wouldn't think the mpg is great!
Are the V50's that small in estate models?

It depends on the needs. My Mk4 Golf estate is a small estate, but can fit my drums and recording equipment with ease with the seats down. The v50 is a bit smaller again but for me, I don't think it would be too significant. I have a feeling the seats up storage isn't amazing.

Top Gear did a terrible review of the v50, complaining you can't fit a couch in it but the v50 is a small estate, like my old Golf. Pop over to some used car dealers to have a look. There is one beside Kart City at the airport which has some v50, Mondeo and Suburbs. You can decide if you need a small, medium or cavern estate.

What I didn't like on the v50 was the cramped rear legroom (same as my Golf).

Citroen C5 estate is worth a look , loads of space, serious comfort and good on fuel in diesel anyway

VW Passat Estate Bluemotion, loads of space for your gear, great mpg also..

Bluemotion models only came out around 2010 so very unlikely to find a decent one for €10k.
