Need a little info, plz. Is a 4 inch straight line crack in the mid left side of my windscreen likely to get me a FAIL in my upcoming NCT ? Doesn't affect my vision whatsoever and been there for the past year or so. TIA.

See p.26 of the NCT Manual.

From my reading of it, it looks like even if the damage is in Zone C (the left half of the windscreen from inside the car), the max area of damage is that which can be contained within a 40mm circle. That being the case, it seems that the damage that you have described is outside the acceptable limits and would result in a fail.
    ZONE A
Damage that can be contained within a 10mm diameter circle (maximum of two defects provided they are
    more than 100mm apart).

    ZONE B
Damage that can be contained within a 20mm diameter circle or hairline cracks up to 30mm long (maximum of two
defects provided they are more than 100mm apart).

    ZONE C
Damage that can be contained within a 40mm diameter circle (maximum of three defects provided they are more than
    100mm apart)

The zones A, B & C seem to correspond only to the area swept by the wipers. Unless the crack is outside the wiper sweep then it's a certain fail.

If you have windscreen cover with your insurance (who doesn't as standard?!?) probably best just get it sorted. They'll come to your house and replace it. Won't cost you a cent, and won't affect your NCB.

Phone your insurance company to check it out. You should be able to get it done the same day.

No need to phone the insurance company if you have glass cover - the autoglass people will do that for you if you give them your policy number. They have phone numbers for all of the insurance companies and can get approval over the phone so if you have your insurance cert at the ready when you call them, they can get approval and call you back to arrange the repair.

However if the OP has had that crack for over a year, maybe he just has a basic policy with no glass cover.

Only full comprehensive policies normally include it as standard, and still not in all cases.
Most third party, fire and theft policies don't include it as standard.

Won't affect NCB, but might affect future ability to obtain insurance from different insurer (f.e. many insurers ask for all the claims you had, and that includes windscreen claims. If there's too many, they refuse to provide a cover.

Autoglass are not the approved repairer for ALL insurance companies. Check your policy or ring your insurer

What determines an "accident" for windscreen cover if it was vandalised?

Once it is broken, that's enough reason. Doesn't have to be a motoring incident

Hit by chippings, debris, falling branch, kids throwing stones, dropping something on it, malicious damage etc all good

    Tks, so what is deliberate?

Some advice for you all, Had a similar crack on the left handside of the windscreen, normally this is a straight forward replacement is for windscreens with no rain sensor.
In my case I got a dealer quote which included the rain sensor replacement. it was obviously a lot higher but within the max limit the insurer would allow. The insurers approved firm would do the replacement but I did put it to the insurer what happens if my rain sensor malfunctions and my preference to have the dealer carry out the work. My case was accepted. Windscreen done by dealer with rain sensor replaced, no issues.
