    right,
I recently bought a car (classic car) in ireland that had english plates on it. The owner did not have the logbook as he only took it as trade in and it had been destroyed in a fire with the previous owner. The car was brought into ireland in 2005 but the owner had an english address also se he did not have to change the plates. How do I get a new logbook for this car ? I need the irish plates so I then get it taxed and nctd and ready to drive :) Please provide a link if possible for any forms to fill out. This is urgent as i will need the car ready to drive in 2 months and by the time iv everything done there won't be much time left :( all help is very much appreciated. Thanks :):)

Contact the previous owner, get them to request a new logbook, then get them to give you the full logbook minus the export section that they will send back to the DVLA. You won't be able to register it here without it.

You can apply for a Cert of Permanent export from dvla in Swansea.
I did it for an old honda bike 4 years back and there were no issues.
The bike had not been registered in my name and I had no paperwork. The form had options to select if you were now a new owner and tick also if no log book was available.
There may have been a change in this process in the last couple of years but check it out.
I know the cert of export was used to register write offs without logbooks here so there were some changes made but I think the Changes only made it impossible to get cert of export for written off car

Edit: Form V756 and also irish revenue still refer to cert of export as a valid alternativee to uk reg cert.

Thanks very much for your reply. But since the car is already in ireland should i just put down the date that it came into the country for the "intended date of export" on the form ? Thanks. Thats very much appreciated..
as for the fire.. a collectors shed went ip in flames along with all the logbooks.. it happened while he took the jaguar i bought out for a drive for a day 😢 very very close 😢😈 thanks again

I would put the date you bought it as the date of your ownership and I would put a date a few weeks after the date you send in form to them as your intended export date.

I'm open to correction but if over 30 years old, I believe you need to pay 200 to register here.
If you look up revenue site re vrt, you will see they refer to registration cert or cert of permanent export - so yes that will be acceptable.
There are a few other things to have sorted for vrt. Look up site to see what is required.

i think you are correct as i heard someone talking about it before ( i too could be wrong?) .. I will have a look on the vet site now. I hope to have the cert back in around 4-5 weeks so ill have to get the irish plates then.

All info about vrt is what you should be looking for.
When you pay the vrt, they will issue you an irish reg. As I said, I'm not sure but I think it's 200 if car is over 30 years.
Once you get the confirmation of your reg number, just get a set of plates made up at any motor factors etc

I heard someone saying that they had to bring a car to a place in Killarney to get plates changed ? But i don't what he was doing exactly or even what the place was :( yes I think your right there :) Unfortunatly my jag has 3 more years to go until that :( Thanks for that :)

You will need to make an appointment at your nearest NCT/VRT centre for registration.
