ETOPS Ireland to America

    One for any TA pilots!

    What would be the difference in sector length and time between an ETOPS flight and a non-ETOPS flight from, for example, DUB-JFK in an A330?

    Also what would be the general difference in the actual routing of the flight? Not looking for any specifics regarding waypoints or navigation just a general overview if at all possible?

    I'm not a TA pilot, but thought I might pitch in - a pretty direct routing to JFK, with assumed ground speed of 450kt will cover little over 6 hours and some 2800 NM. It depends where the NAT tracks are at any given day, real track might be longer than that

    non-ETOPS pretty much mean you cannot be further than 60 minutes away from nearest suitable airfield, that means you should route it further north, closer to Iceland and Greenland, but it doesn't mean the route must go overhead, but just close enough for the aircraft to be able to divert within 60 minutes, should one of the engines go bad. In reality, because NAT tracks aren't always where you want them you might end up only doing some extra 200 NM.. time-wise if jetstream is not causing too much trouble, non-etops should be only about an hour longer..

    Well the A330 is approved for ETOPS-240 on paper. Up to the airlines procedures if they want to use it.

    well yeah, A330 wasn't the best example, but if you want to play around with navigation tools, try http://skyvector.com/ that's the best free tool I've seen - more suitable for VFR than IFR, but still pretty useful

    What would be the difference in sector length and time between an ETOPS flight and a non-ETOPS flight from, for example, DUB-JFK in an A330?

    I've done non-ETOPS to JFK. Was approx 8 hours that time, usually time would be under 7 hours. (This memory is quite old so can't vouch for the accuracy of my noggin!!)
