I have an NCT in an hours time and just realised that I have golf clubs and a few other things in the boot and nowhere to put them as I'm at work.
Will they test it with boot like that?

No. Boot has to be empty so they can access the spare wheel.

As long as they've access to the spare tyre, you should be grand. why not take the golf clubs out once you get to the centre and bring them into the waiting room with you?

If your spare wheel is in the boot. If it's on the rear door or under the car, then it doesn't matter what's in the boot so long as it's not interfering with the seat belts (lying on them, etc).

In the past I have left hub caps and stuff in the boot. It doesn't have to empty, it just has to be easy to get at your spare wheel.

You could always take the stuff out and leave it in work?

No it has to be empty, you could take the stuff out at the centre and just leave it in a corner or something where you can see it, its a nice day anyway!

Edit...oops! I always thought it had to be empty cos they shake the car around or something....apologies!

    Just ask the tester.

Have the 6 iron in your hand and a menacing expression when the tester comes out with the sheet.

The empty boot request has nothing to do with the spare, it's so they can check the body structure inside and around the boot for corrosion if needed. In my experience most testers don't mind a few items in the boot if they're easy to shove out of the way.

PS: A spare is not mandatory but if there's one in the car they'll check it and advise of any defects. A defective spare will not cause you to fail the test unless it's fitted to an axle during the test.

Not true, I once got failed on my pajero sport which has the wheel underneath outside for having a boot that had stuff in it.

Well, not true because it's not just about the spare wheel it turns out.

Looking at the handbook, they can't fail you because the boot isn't empty, but they do need access to the boot to inspect the boot floor/bodywork. So if you have a set of clubs or a pram or something in there, they won't be able to get at it. But if you just have a couple of pairs of shoes, or a few other light items (like hubcaps in my case), they can still get in to do a proper inspection.

Short answer: your boot doesn't have to be completely empty, but they do need to be able to lift the lid easily without taking anything out or moving stuff around.

I got failed on having items in the boot, that was all it failed on. They stated it needs to be completely empty to pass.

Perhaps that was an earlier version of the test. The latest handbook doesn't allow for the car to be failed if the boot is not empty. It only requires that the boot is not "completely full" and that the boot floor is accessible.

Boot has to be empty, nothing to do with spare wheel, just as long as it can be checked for structural damage and corrosion.
